Abbe grabs 2nd win
DU racer edges local favorite in women's slalom at FIS Holiday Classic

Steamboat Springs — For a few moments, it looked as if hometown ski racer Lisa Perricone would top the field in the women’s slalom race on the second day of the FIS Holiday Classic on Monday morning at Howelsen Hill.
But then, University of Denver skier Claire Abbe stepped into the starting gate and proceeded to ruin Perricone’s homecoming by edging her at the finish line in less time than it takes to blink.
Perricone posted the third-fastest time in the opening run of Monday’s slalom race, but the former Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club standout who now races for the University of Colorado set the standard in her second run.
After dancing through the gates in a time of 39.40 seconds (the fastest run of the day), there were only two racers with a chance of topping her combined time of 1:20.51.
Her chances improved after University of Colorado teammate Katie Hartman posted a time of 40.23 seconds in her second attempt and slipped behind the Steamboat racer in the standings. But Abbe, who had posted the fastest first-run time, still was waiting at the top of the hill for her shot.
Abbe, who also won the opening race Sunday evening, proved she wasn’t going to let Perricone end her streak at this year’s Holiday Classic.
She tore through the course in a time of 39.71 seconds to post a two-run total of 1:20.16, and push Perricone into second place.
Hartman finished third, Julia Littman was fourth, and Steamboat’s Jennifer Allen was fifth. Lauren Samuels was sixth, Jennifer Tank was seventh, Lauren Eder was eighth, Steamboat’s Mary Rachel Hostetter was ninth, and University of Denver’s Georgia Wettlaufer rounded out the top 10.
Monday morning’s race kicked off the second day of racing in this year’s Holiday Classic, which will end today with the final men’s race.
The men also were scheduled to race Monday evening, but results were not available at press time.
Today’s racing will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the men’s first run.
The second run is slated for 10:30 a.m.
