— For five local artists featured in the Open Studio and Art Sale this weekend, their main objective is to share with the community a continuum of moments through mixed media.

“It is always interesting to see something someone worked on in 2007 and then to see something from the 1990s,” said Maggie Smith, a local artist. “You can see how different things were and how people change and how they move forward.”

At Copper Ridge Studios, Dawn Wilde, Pat Walsh, Smith, Annie Meyer and Susan Schiesser will be featured in the Open Studio and Art Sale. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. The event is free, and refreshments will be available.

“It’s about showing this accumulation of work everyone has done over the years and sharing it with the community,” Walsh said. “It’s a treat to be able to share this with people.”

One of the newer artists to the studio is Wilde. She moved to Steamboat two years ago to be closer to family after her husband died. After taking a break from her life’s passion, she found a new opportunity to pursue her artistic endeavors at the Copper Ridge Studios.

Finding her artistic rhythm again, Wilde said, is like coming home. For her, it’s not about creating a masterpiece but fulfilling a creative need.

“It makes me feel like a real person to be back to work,” Wilde said. “It’s very important to have a space to work in — it’s a way to express myself.”

Not only that, being in a creative environment among other artists opens the door to newfound creativity.

“Being part of a multi-artist space allows you to get inspired because you can see what other people are doing and it opens up creative parts in you that may be hidden or something that you may not even recognize,” Smith said.

Seeing different types of art all in one place is an aspect about this event that Smith is looking forward to. Between all of the artists, there will be more than 100 pieces in a variety of forms and sizes.

“It’s always good to have your work seen not just piece by piece but lots of it at one time,” Wilde said. “Sometimes one piece can tell you something about all the other pieces and even the artist.”

This will be the first time these five artists have gotten together to share their work with the community. Along with the artwork on display, there will be art demonstrations including an opportunity to learn printmaking techniques.
