You don’t need a time-traveling DeLorean to experience this week’s performances of Steamboat Cabaret, returning to the Historic Art Depot for a five-show run.

A beloved fundraiser for Steamboat Creates, the 43rd annual comedy show is themed “Back to Our Future,” with this year’s event exploring the Yampa Valley’s past, present and future.

The much-anticipated community theater production opens Wednesday night and runs through Saturday, promising five shows filled with laughter, songs and nostalgia.

Cabaret is more than just a local show — it’s a Steamboat Springs tradition. Produced by the local nonprofit Steamboat Creates, the production is proudly written, performed and directed by locals, for locals. Its distinct blend of satire, music and humor offers a look at the town through the lens of its own residents — all with a wink, a grin and sometimes jazz hands.

This year’s theme, “Back to Our Future,” pays tribute to both the roots and forward momentum of the Steamboat community. Inspired by the classic 1980s film “Back to the Future,” the production weaves time-travel themes into its storytelling while poking fun at local issues, characters and quirks. Audiences are encouraged to lean into the nostalgia and show up in their finest 1980s attire.

“Cabaret is where locals come out to celebrate, make jokes, and create a community within our town,” said Kalynn Beckler, artistic director for this year’s production. “This year’s theme is a reminder that our past informs our future — and both are worth celebrating. Plus, who doesn’t love an excuse to poke fun at local issues while wearing spandex?”

The show takes place at the historic Art Depot in downtown Steamboat Springs, a fitting venue with its own rich history, now a dedicated hub for local artists. Each evening’s performance promises a mix of original songs, sketches and comedic commentary, all created by talented Steamboat citizens.

Cabaret is the largest fundraiser of the year for Steamboat Creates, the organization behind many of the town’s important arts initiatives. Proceeds support year-round programming including Art in the Park, youth summer camps, public art projects, and essential outreach to support working artists in the Yampa Valley.

“The funds raised during Cabaret help us keep the arts alive and thriving in Steamboat,” said Kim Keith, executive director of Steamboat Creates. “This show is a celebration of our community’s creative spirit and a crucial investment in its future.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with performances beginning at 7 p.m. For the Saturday matinee, doors open at 3:30 p.m. and showtime is 4 p.m.

Tickets are available online or at the door, and early purchase is recommended — Cabaret has a loyal fan base and shows often sell out quickly.

For longtime locals and newcomers alike, Cabaret is an unforgettable experience. So tease your hair, dust off that jean jacket, and get ready to laugh your way back to our future.
