Social distancing doesn’t stop at the front door

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Social distancing is a key factor in slowing the spread of COVID-19. Social distancing practices should not stop at the front door but should continue well into the home between parents and kids and kids and their friends.

“We can’t let down our guard just because we walked in the front door,” said Routt County Emergency Operations Director David ‘Mo’ DeMorat. “Taking these measures as far as possible is a key defense in keeping our community safe.”

Social distancing is an effective tool for preventing the spread of disease. It can include large-scale measures like canceling group events or closing public space, as well as personal decisions such as avoiding crowds. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment explains social distancing as the following:

 • Try to keep six feet between yourself and other people whenever possible, particularly when you or others are sick. No hugs, no handshakes.

• Work from home if you can.

• Keep children and teens from gathering in other public places when school is closed.

• Stay home.

• Avoid group gatherings. The smallest group in the largest space poses the least risk. The current advice is to not attend gatherings of more than 10 people.
