What: Reads & Reels: “The Princess Bride”
When: 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13
Where: Off the Beaten Path bookstore, 68 Ninth St.

Off the Beaten Path aims to be more than a store, more than a coffee shop — more like a community center, a gathering area, said inventory receiver Jenna Meier Bilbo.

“Everyone loves movies,” she said, “and so many movie ideas come from books.”

The series debuted in October in the spirit of Halloween with a showing of the 1974 comedy horror, “Young Frankenstein.” November brought 1976 political thriller “All the President’s Men.” After a break for holiday-hectic December, January‘s showing was “Anonymous,” the 2011 film with a theatrical release poster imploring, “Was Shakespeare a Fraud?”

“The Princess Bride” as February’s pick honors Valentine’s Day, whether you’re celebrating by way of a cozy, candlelit dinner with a loved one or cheering heartily at a potential painful and untimely death by sword for our heroine’s easily loath-able ex-fiance.

“It’s a hilarious book and movie that embodies Valentine’s Day for the entire family,” said Off the Beaten Path media coordinator Kerrick Stevens.

“So few people actually realize ‘The Princess Bride’ is based on a book, even though that’s mentioned in the movie,” Bilbo said. “And it is by no means required that someone reads the books ahead of time to attend the event. Come meet new friends and decide to read the book together afterward, if the literary bug bites.”

Besides the free movie screening, Off the Beaten Path will also be offering happy hour prices on wine, beer and coffee cocktails at its cafe. A 10 percent discount will also be offered on “The Princess Bride” items, both the paperback novel and the deluxe hardcover collector’s edition — its cover elegant in shiny gold script.

Inconceivable, you say? Too good to be true? But alas… as you wish. “The Princess Bride” begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday; next month’s event will be a showing of “The Martian” on March 20.
