Routt County prep sports teams resume season play

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Now that the winter break is nearing a close, competition resumes for Routt County high school teams.

While Steamboat Springs High School and Hayden High School basketball teams leave town for tournaments, Steamboat Springs hockey hosts games Friday and Saturday, and Soroco High School basketball is at home against West Grand on Saturday.

  • No. 6 Steamboat Springs boys (6-2) at Roughrider Shootout
The Sailors travel to Thornton for the Roughrider shootout this weekend and will take on Skyview (1-7) at 4:40 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3. The Sailors will also face Pueblo County (3-6) on Friday and Denver West (1-6) on Saturday. The Sailors entered the holiday break after a 67-55 loss to Mead at home, but they’re looking to bounce back on a strong note as they prepare to host Battle Mountain on Friday, Jan. 18. Senior Mac Riniker leads the Sailors with 20.3 points per game, and senior Aden Knaus is the second-top scorer, averaging 10.3 points per game.
  • Steamboat Springs girls (2-6) at Roughrider Shootout
The Sailors will also join the boys at the Roughrider Shootout, taking on Roosevelt (3-2) at 6:20 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, Niwot (2-4) at 11:40 a.m. Friday and Pueblo County (4-5) at 11:40 a.m. Saturday. After notching their first win in two years, the Sailors have added another and are looking to continue the trend going into the tournament before they travel to Palisade for their first Western Slope League game Friday, Jan. 11. Junior Shelbee Weiss leads the Sailors, averaging 5.7 points per game.
  • Soroco girls (8-1) vs. West Grand (3-5) at 1 p.m. Saturday Jan. 5
The Rams are on a hot streak. After dropping the championship game at the Steamboat Shootout to Prairie View, 61-54, the Rams are in the midst of a three-game winning streak, and there’s no reason it won’t continue. The Mustangs have lost four games in a row and average 29 points per game to the Rams’ 57.8. Soroco senior Chloe Veilleux is the player to watch, averaging 18.8 points per game while freshman Kayedence Bruner has also been making waves at 11.1 points per game.
  • Soroco boys (4-3) vs. West Grand (3-5) at 4 p.m. Saturday Jan. 5
The Rams have high hopes for a successful year and will look to capitalize on an evenly-matched opponent. Senior Grant Redmond leads the Rams with 17.3 points per game and sophomore Liam Yaconiello is next best, averaging 8.1 points per game. As a team, the Rams average 29.6 points per game, while the Panthers average 36.6.
  • Hayden girls (4-4) vs. Rangely (4-2) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday Jan. 5
Tigers head coach Lori Raper believes she can lead her team to the top of the Western Slope, and the Tigers will begin that journey Saturday. The Hayden girls are led by Joey Deckler at 10.4 points per game, while the team averages 38 points per game. Junior Alex Camilletti will also be one to watch on both offense and defense as one of the taller players and second-leading scorer at 6.4 points per game. Rangely averages 30.2 points per game, and despite the winning record, are below the Tigers in the Class 2A Western Slope League rankings.
  • Hayden boys (3-4) vs. Rangely (0-5) at 4 p.m. Saturday Jan. 5
The Tigers are on the cusp of a winning record, and a victory over the Panthers could propel the team forward. Seniors Chris Carrouth and Mason Brewer lead the team in scoring, averaging 10 and 11 points per game respectively. Rangely has struggled to have a productive offense beyond its star player senior Micah Zenner, who averages 15.6 points per game.
  • Steamboat hockey (2-5) vs. Chaparral (4-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, vs. Aspen (2-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5
The Sailors will take on Class 5A Chaparral on Friday before facing league-foe Aspen, which has a 2-1 record in the conference to the Sailors’ 2-3 record. Tanner Ripley leads the Sailors with seven goals this season, and Wyatt Boatright is next with five.
  • Steamboat Springs, Soroco and Hayden wrestling at Eagle Valley, 9 a.m. Saturday Jan. 5
All three Routt County teams are coming off strong performances in West Grand. The Sailors topped the Routt County teams, taking second overall as a team while Hayden took third. Soroco did not place as a team but Jace Logan, 170, finished first in his weight class. Steamboat Springs juniors Tucker Havel, 132; John Slowey, 195; and Spencer Mader, 126, all took home first-place titles and remain unbeaten so far this season. Hayden sophomores Kyler Campbell, 106; Keenan Hayes, 152; and Hunter Planansky, 182, also won their weight classes. Freshman Dylan Zimmerman, 113, has shown a lot of promise as a transfer this year and took second.
