Our tabloid newspaper lends itself neatly to one story and one dominant photo each day. On Monday, we wrestled with a decision over which photo to run on Tuesday's front page with the story about the explosion that killed two teenagers.
Here is the photo that we felt best told the story of what happened. It shows an empty beer can in the foreground with the oil well site in the background.
In the end, we chose not to make this the dominant photo on the front page, though many in the newsroom, including me, felt it was the strongest image. After a conversation with Publisher Bryna Larsen, we decided that the photo, while strong, was insensitive to the families who lost their teen sons Saturday night.
We chose this photo for the front page. It certainly was the safer and likely most prudent choice, even if it is not the stronger image.
All of the photos were shot Monday by John F. Russell.
I think we made the right call, but I'm curious what others think. Which photo would you have put on the front page?
