The source: Pat Gleason

Posted by sstanford on April 18, 2007

As you aware if you have seen our Web site, Pat Gleason has stepped forward as the source of the DeVincentis e-mails ...

Here is how I responded in a story that will publish tomorrow:

"We did not and would not ask Pat Gleason to come forward as the source of these e-mails; however, I appreciate that he did. We are always better served when we can share information we have with our readers. And in this case, it is clear that our readers considered the e-mail source's identity to be a critical element of the story."

I am surprised that more people did not suspect Gleason as the source, given the timing of his resignation from the School Board in relation to our initial story about the e-mails. At the same time, I understand the assumption that the e-mails came from a school employee.

There will be differing opinions about what Gleason did. But I respect that he tried to follow his conscience in providing the e-mails, resigning from the School Board and finally, stepping forward as the source.
