John T. Salazar: Time for health care reform

Rather than debate Obamacare in the abstract, it is more useful to focus on the details of the 1000 page House Bill. Here is a link that provides short bullet points on the contents of the first 700 pages of the bill: http://www.saveourcountrynow.net/foru....

You can read it in five minutes or less.

Orwell himself could not have imagined a bureaucracy as perverse or nighmarish. Congressman Salazar, please vote no on this disaster.

Thanks. Interesting article.

Dr. Henry R. Savage: Disputing Krugman

To those of you who have commented on Dr. Savage's editorial, do you have any evidence to refute his basic thesis: (1) global warming that has been observed on Earth has been caused by natural variations in solar cycles; and (2) we know this to be true because scientists have observed the same warming over the same period of time on other planets where there is no human activity (e.g., Mars)?

If you have this evidence, I would be interested to see it. With respect for each of you, however, Dr. Savage's belief in God or whether you perceive him to be a member of the "religious right" does not disprove (1) or (2), any more than the suggestion that any of you (1) does not believe in God and (2) are members of the "immoral left" would prove the contrary.

Now I need to go back to work.

Young crew represents Steamboat in aerials

While I very much appreciate your coverage of the Freestyle Junior Olympics, your focus on whether particular Steamboat athletes won medals for a top three finish in their events has caused you to omit the rest of the story that would be of interest to freestyle skiing fans.

Although medals are awarded for the top three male and female finishers in each event, the top three male and female finishers per age class (13-14, 15-16, and 17-18) also win medals. For example, in Friday's single moguls, Ryan Dyer won a silver medal for finishing second in the country in his age class (15-16) and Michael DeGrandis (skiing with a broken hand) won a sliver for his age class (13-14). Shelby Dyer won a silver medal for her age class, and Aliison Crowe finished fourth in her age class, even though she was ill while competing.

I could make similar comments about your coverage of the halfpipe, slopestyle and aerial events. For example, Tyler Saxe and Stephen Wilson (both 14) competed in their second consecutive JO's for aerials, with Wilson in strong position after his first jump to win an age class medal. Saxe also qualified to compete in today's dual moguls as one of the youngest competitors in that field.

By focusing on top three overall finishes, you diminish the accomplishments of the 40 Steamboat athletes who earned a right to compete as the best athletes in their disciplines in the Rocky Mountain Division and among the best in the country.

Our View: Vote 'yes' for rec center

I don't know about the "anti-rec center ad," but I do know this. Assuming that there are 10,000 people in Steamboat and that the rec center costs only $60,000,000 with interest, the cost is $6000 for every person in town. You can argue that not everyone is a homeowner and thus does not share in the tax burden and that some homes are worth more than others and that people who move into town also will pay taxes. But there is no getting around that this is a very expensive and extravagant project that will destroy existing park space (Ski Town Fields). The proposed rec center has the wrong design, the wrong location, and the wrong price. Vote no.

Traffic concerns grow

The "Howlesen" bypass is ill-conceived, and would seriously harm the esssential character of Steamboat. Can't we find a way to address traffic issues without putting roaring semi-trucks on Emerald?

The logical option for a bypass is not to build a new road, but to improve existing roads. For example, Twentymile Road connects with Highway 40 to the west of town and with County Roads that already traverse over the south ridge of Emerald.

Rec center up to voters

So we should spend $3400 for every man, woman and child in Steamboat to build this facility, plus additional amounts every year to maintain it...so that 50 kids can have a diving pool? If I were looking for new place to work out, I could buy quite a few gym memberships for the amount that this bloated project would cost my family. I'll be voting no.

David Wilson: E-mails and the rule of law

You're welcome. To the best of my knowledge, both Baker and his girlfriend also used (1) their school (publicly-sponsored) e-mail addresses; (2) wrote e-mails while they were on the clock; and (3) the e-mails were administered using district-owned equipment. Under the Court's analysis, these facts were insufficient to make the e-mails open records.
