dv8 - oh right, Einstein, and yet your comment is brilliant. The blather of everyone else is just so amusing. Sure, "this issue is NOT that difficult to work through" just shove it down our throats and give TC whatever they ask for.
The pilot never ceases to amaze me. My dog can think more clearly than Rob Douglas. Is this guy really going to have a column every week? His first column about TC was dumb enough, then he got on the blog and made an idiot of himself. Now he writes another one where he tries to make it 'locals vs. business.' He clearly didn't read or couldn't get the meaning out of the many intelligent comments that disagreed with him. He seems to really hate these people.
Boyer, Larsen, whoever's home at the Pilot: what are you thinking? Do you just want to annoy a lot of people to keep the hits coming on your website? Maybe that's it because the Pilot was never really based on journalism. It's always been about advertising and money with good journalism way in the back seat. Yes, you've got to make a buck, but come on. Your editorial in favor of TC fit right in with the theme: anything for a buck, who cares about anything else.
Here are the closing dates of Colorado ski resorts (from CO Ski Country). We don't compare too well especially considering how much snow we have.
* Arapahoe Basin - June 8 * Aspen Highlands - April 6 ends weekday operations; April 19-20 and 26-27 open weekends ONLY * Aspen Mountain - April 13 * Beaver Creek - April 13 * Breckenridge - April 20 * Buttermilk - April 6 **CLOSED** * Copper - April 13 * Crested Butte - April 13 * Echo Mountain - May 4 * Eldora - April 13 * Howelsen - March 30 **CLOSED** * Keystone - April 13 * Loveland - May 4 * Monarch - April 13 * Powderhorn - March 30 **CLOSED** * Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort - April 6 **CLOSED** * Silverton - April 27 * Ski Cooper - March 30 **CLOSED** * Snowmass - April 13 * SolVista - March 30 **CLOSED** * Steamboat - April 6 **CLOSED** * Sunlight - April 6 ends weekday operations; April 12-13 open weekend ONLY * Telluride - April 6 **CLOSED** * Vail - April 13 * Winter Park - April 13 * Wolf Creek -April 13 ends weekday operations; April 19-20 and 26-27 open weekends ONLY
The board blew it not hiring Smyser when they could. I never understood why there was such a big deal about doing a 'nationwide search' (wasn't that one of the ABC's campaign promises?) for a superintendent when we had a reportedly excellent one right here under our noses. It must have been slightly insulting to Smyser to have to hear all the talk about finding the perfect superintendent when she was here willing to take the job. I just hope one of the three remaining unknowns works out.
Another blunder was announcing all-day kindergarten before there's anywhere to put it. Should have waited a year until there are classrooms built. Right now we've got classes at Straw. Park in office space with no windows, classes at Soda in trailers. Where are they thinking all-day K is going to go?
"It maybe does not go to her benefit because we have seen what her strengths and weaknesses are," she said. "The other candidates come cold to us, and we don't really know how they operate."
sounds rather negative. I would think they would be encouraging Smyser to apply given how hard it can be to find someone who gets along with all the Steamboat 'factions' plus the fact that she apparently has done a good job. An unknown newcomer may or may not come with baggage, i.e. personality problems that don't show up in interviews...been there, done that.
Carrie - Let me guess - You're planning on running for office? Montessori may be great in a lot of cases but not everyone lives and dies by the 'Montessori method.'
80488mom - I do see your point. Maybe there should be regular half-day K with an optional 'extended day' - with tuition -for those who need the day care. That is the system in some other districts.
"while it is our sense that no perfect defense has yet been devised to deter a determined criminal, we nevertheless pledge to take whatever measures necessary to prevent this from occurring again."
This doesn't exactly fill you with confidence in the bank. It's like, well we'll try, but if someone really wants to do it it'll happen again.
stbtwannabe - What makes you think it required that much intelligence? They worked there, they had access to accounts, and they no doubt chose ones with account holders who didn't keep track. The amazing thing is that there was no system at the bank to catch it.
Okay Carrie, I'm sure whatever you've decided is great for you and it's really none of my business. I get the POINTS with the capital letters! But regarding the all-day K study, it just seemed sort of obvious that the results of a 'study' of all-day kindergarten would depend on what each child's other options were, i.e. where would that child be if not in all-day K? You say the "full day K research shows that it is beneficial" but it looks to me like the results were inconclusive, which is not surprising.
Rob Douglas: Is business a dirty word?

No word from Sandra Smyser
The comment from Anderson,
"It maybe does not go to her benefit because we have seen what her strengths and weaknesses are," she said. "The other candidates come cold to us, and we don't really know how they operate."
sounds rather negative.
