Pam used to work at Community First and was let go...um, wonder why?? I don't think she worked at Wells Fargo. What gets me is how long our judicial system lets them hang out, giving them plenty of time to hide the money, sell things, etc... Why on earth weren't their assets frozen? Pam started out buying a new house, then 4 new cars a year, jet skiis, motorcycles, big screen tv's, furniture, etc...A trip to Africa on a supposed "mission" trip right before she got arrested. Hiding some money??? It is also disgusting how she hides herself as a "Christian" woman! Who is she fooling? I really feel sorry for the kids, they are the ones who will get the royal shaft from this.
Way to go Bob! I totally agree with you. Steamboat has such great assets to market, I do not think we would have any problem attracting large amounts of tourists. In fact, we could offer discounts or some other type of incentives to bring those tourists back once they know TC is not over-running town. I still have trouble with the huge investment the City wants to make for one entity. And that entity makes big money on these tournaments! If TC keeps growing like they are predicting, then they will outgrow Steamboat shortly and leave. Then we sit with our 10 million dollar fields, money that we could definitely utilize better elsewhere.
424, I agree with you that sound financial planning needs to be done. That means not having all your eggs in one basket. (and a huge assumption that our current council and management can do this???) I think we need to be a little tougher on TC. No temporary 2 year contract with all the expenses of building more fields. Since TC is also looking at other places (i.e., less expensive) but those locations are not ready yet, what would keep them from saying bye-bye after 2 years and we are left with a lot of expensive fields we don't need. We certainly have much more important things to be spending our money on! I say, if we are to compromise, they sign a 10 year contract or nothing. Otherwise, bye-bye.
Man alive, Steamboat will just fine without T C. If the chamber wasn't so one-sided, they could easily promote Steamboat to the tourists that used to come here to enjoy all the recreational and cultural activities we offer. The people who no longer come because of TC. Give these former guests a good deal to come back...they will and have such a good time, they will tell their friends and etc...Steamboat may feel it for the first year without TC but I'll bet we won't after that. On top of it, we won't have to spend all that money building new fields so TC can make a bigger profit. Personally, I would rather wait on people who appreciate our place and leave good tips instead of getting stiffed and yelled at because we couldn't serve 60 people in 5 minutes! I'm sure, if the city has to tighten up for a year, it would not be so bad. There is enough waste that tightening the purse strings would probably be beneficial.
Drumski, I also could not qualify for the affordable housing in Wildhorse because my income is too low. I also have a degree and 3 respectable, good jobs. After living here for almost 30 years, I will also need to move if I ever want to retire and go down to maybe one job. The heart and soul of this valley is in big danger but I am still hopeful that some of it may be saved. The Vision 2030 site had some insight into this. The fees developers are paying should be used west of town for less expensive housing.
Plain and simple, the lot on 8th and Oak needs to be a three story park house. Make it paid parking (to pay for the structure)and add meters to the prime areas like Lincoln Ave. Use this money to address mass transit needs, bike lanes, etc. BTW, Go-Fers is privately owned and not intended to be free parking, what a nice benefit some folks had for a while. And to all of you who feel so privileged that you park in handicap spaces, fire lanes at Central Park because of your laziness, shame on you. Our community service officers should patrol these areas and issue heavy fines for doing this. When I was handicapped after an injury, I could never find a spot. Always, they were occupied by someone without the proper permit. One of my pet peeves along with smokers who throw their butts out the window!
I just do not understand why we the people of Steamboat have to pay for Triple Crown to make the big money? Why on earth, if they are really serious, don't they contribute some of the money? I do not want to spend any money towards their profit. We have plenty of fields for our needs. Time to say bye-bye, find some other suckers who will pay for them to profit. There is no doubt Steamboat will attract other diverse groups who won't requite us to spend over $20 - 30 million just to please them.
There is something very wrong in this world when kids go to jail for stealing groceries or possessing some pot. But, steal over a million dollars and they want a plea bargain because it cost to much to prosecute??? They stole a lot of money, no doubt most of what they own was bought with stolen money. Williams bought a brand new custom Tahoe right around the time she was arrested. Whose money was that? Why weren't their assets frozen? Why don't they have to pay it back? How many accounts around the world do they have money in? I could use a million dollars too. If it's that easy to get without any ramifications, I may need to apply for a job at Alpine too. Stealing is stealing, no matter who or what you are. The lady who embezzled less than $100,000 from a school district got over 7 years. Sure hope justice is served in this case.
I would like to know where they come up with the income figures. I am a single person and don't make even close to $47,240. Hard to make that kind of money when wages are $10 - 15 an hour. Also, the affordable housing issue is much more complicated than calling us "poor white trash". Many of us have lived here for many years; by choice, for quality, not quantity of life. However, even with the advantage of years, it is becoming increasing difficult to make ends continue to meet. Yes, it is a resort. Yes, every money-hungry person is on the fast train to get here. But, Steamboat is (or was) a a real town with real people who, believe it or not, helped form this community. We have a responsibility to try to keep a few of them here.
My favorite part of the story is the paragraph about Pam being a "good" person and "good" mother. Since when is a felony thief considered good??? How can a mother be defined as good when she sets a wonderful example of stealing and when she gets taken away to the big house, abandoning her kids?? How twisted and deranged can you get?
