Man who shot bear receives no jail time

Does anyone have an issue with the person who recklessly broke the law by leaving non-bear-proof trash containers in the alley? What Kent did is senseless; what the bear did is the nature of bears; what the humans did who left their trash in a manner that the bear could get to it was tragic for all involved.

Study projects big increase in US 40 traffic

City Planning Services Manager Eastman says the bottleneck does not yet exist at 13th Street. To what city is he referring? Putting the blame for the bottleneck at the intersection of 129 and 40 does nothing to address the 13th Street problem. How long will the City's historic "do nothing" approach be allowed to continue?

Council candidates address concerns about Steamboat 700 at forum

Only the unopposed City Council member states his unwavering support for Steamboat 700. Each of the reasons given by other candidates for opposing it must be addressed, preferably by a public vote. Please put this issue on the ballot.

Emergency responders making plans as traffic ties up town

Sincere thanks go to Scott and Fred for the much-needed civics lessons. I didn't know that the downtown merchants have such clout, or that the Gallagher amendment causes such inequities. My husband and I joke about a bypass that would go behind Emerald Mtn. and end up at the James Brown Bridge. Can you imagine what opposition that would evoke?

Calls for vote on 700 continue

The question still remains: what will it take for the 700 project to be a ballot issue? Clearly its most ardent supporters want to avoid putting the 700 to a vote because it's likely to fail. Please note that most of 700's primary supporters are connected to the building industry in one way or another.

If you received a mail-in ballot today, would you vote for Kevin Bennett or Cari Hermacinski for City Council in District 1?

I can sit on my sofa and return repeatedly to this site and vote again and again. The disclaimer "this is not a scientific poll" ought to add that people can vote as frequently as they like, thereby totally skewing the poll's results.

Planning Commission supports 700

Aichempty, Fred and Cedar: Your perspectives on the Steamboat 700 and Highway 40 traffic issues are the best! Is there any way logical, planful people like you can persuade City Council to put on the brakes regarding Steamboat 700 until the traffic and infrastructure problems are solved? The timing the the "resurfacing" of Lincoln Avenue and the above debate is ironic. How can we hold CDOT responsible for its ridiculous decisions regarding Highway 40?

Steamboat 700 open house draws large crowd

There was significant community support for putting the 700 annexation decision on this fall's election ballot. Instead Council plans to vote on the annexation next month. Open houses and town hall meetings do not generate the level of public involvement that a ballot issue would. I am not at all comfortable with seven people making a decision that will affect us and future citizens for generations to come.

Search and Rescue looks back on 4 decades of missions

As a former RCS&R member, I add my kudos to a fabulous, dedicated group of people. Buying a fishing, hunting and/or hiking license annually is the least we can do to support S&R's invaluable work.

No-knock ACET raid catches 3 with meth and coke

Thank you, Garrett and the other ACET members. Your hard work paid off. Now I hope the justice system will keep these alleged criminals in jail until their trials. $20K bonds for men holding at least $61K worth of drugs seem pretty minimal.
