I'm only going to say this in the paper's defense, but a couple of things could have happened. Either who ever was involved maybe wanted this out of the papers in which case it was a polite and responsible thing for the paper to do. Or maybe all of the facts or the story behind it had not developed yet either from a prolonged investigation or lack of communication from the PD, also in which case it was responsible for the paper to find that out before cranking out a tweaked version of what actually happened. I they had done that everybody would be up in arms about how false it was. Cut them a break.
Cindy, What does talking with Jeanne Whiddon have to do with the foreclosure rate? Aichempy brings up a good point in who will cover the cost when the 700 doesn't materialize. Everyone knows that construction always takes longer than planned, costs more than initially planned, and sometimes runs out of funding. In a town that is taking money away from its employees already and can't even pay for paper coffee cups at the police department, where is the money going to come from when the inevitable happens. FRED, when you ask why we don't count on city council to take of something that shouldn't be instead of waiting for the ballot, WHAT BLOCK HAVE YOU BEEN AROUND? Because this block has been torn apart, had severe plastic surgery, and given a new and unwanted identity by this ALL KNOWING city council that has done nothing but approved ideas that change this community. Look at a picture of steamboat back in the day, from when you came to this block, and tell me if you think where we are going is a great place. We bank on people coming to Steamboat to ski yet charge $100 dollars a day to ski, and $300 dollars a night to stay here. No one is going to come to a town like that, especially when the locals are bitter. Change needs to come, and that change needs to be back to the old days.
I would have to take Amy's side on this as well. Especially for Colorado and more especially for Steamboat, March is no time to count on the roads being dry. And although I'm sure you are a good driver, you were not driving appropriately if you counted out the worst of conditions. I would also agree with you "oldlocal" that it would be a much better situation if everyone were alive. But the speed limit does not need to be reduced. Simply drive according to the old rule that it can snow in July in Steamboat and drive with that in the back of your mind.
I would completely agree with seeuski. Speeding or not you were speeding for the conditions you were driving in, and inexperience led to you believe you could go just under the posted limit, not to mention told you to hit your brakes. People need to understand that posted speed limits are posted that speed for dry summertime driving and conditions (especially on Rabbit Ears) are very marginal at best for the entire duration of the winter. Granted we are all happy this man is okay after the crash, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't get a slap on the wrist for his driving regardless of where he is from.
Yeah, but have they paid back that loan they defaulted on a year or two ago? Also I would hardly call the 6-pack lift an improvement. Averaging 80 stops or slows a day doesn't move nearly as fast as southface and christy's used to.
Forget what tourists need. How about the locals? When are you going to consider them first exduffer? Secondly that is by far not the worst intersection in town. How about Oak and 4th where cars park all the way up to the intersection and it is impossible to cross Oak traveling up 4th because one can't see the cars coming? And that intersection aside it would be beneficial for the town to put turn signals everywhere, but honestly that costs money and it would make anyone's travel take a little longer. I sure people will find a way to complain about that.
let's be honest here, there are so many bears causing problems all over town and the mountain. I know people are going to say "well we moved into their habitat" but now we live here so too bad. Other than a person shooting a firearm within city limits, and most likely unlicensed (which is very wrong and should be prosecuted) we should look at this as one more pest out of the way and a bargain bear skin for someone.
Ridiculous. Let's make really sad faces, maybe try to work up some tears, and use puffy lips to whine at tourists to please respect the river and try to refrain from drinking and littering THE LIVING HELL out of our beloved river. You honestly think tourists are going to give any thought what so ever to a river that isn't in their home town. Laws and regulations are the only thing that will have any effect on the vast amount of trash and cans and clothes left all around the river last summer. It was disgusting and just the mere fact that we are too much of a sissy town to make any regulations or laws simply shows that we truly do not even respect our own river. Let's just sit back and worry about stepping on toes and how we are going to pay for it, instead of actually taking care of one of the true assets of this town and paying for it later.
I would have to say that I would rather see the lot in the condition it is right now, than another huge 4 story building that blocks views and changes the historical look of downtown.
