i'm not against roundabouts, i'm just against putting this one in when there are other intersections on mt werner circle that need it more. i've sat in a line of traffic backed from the ski time square stop sign all the way around the ski time roundabout and back past the bus stop almost to the sheraton entrance. most of this traffic is just using the ski time square roundabout as a turnaround. if there was a roundabout at ski time and mt. werner, all this traffic could turn around there instead of pulling into ski time square. one day around christmas last winter, it took me almost fifteen minutes to get from the torian plum to the stop sign at the end of ski time square.
nondescript,
i'm not sure if your comment is serious or not, but one of my only problems with roundabouts is people's inability to use their turn signals properly when driving through them. i was told by a european friend that the proper etiquette is to turn your left turn signal on when entering the roundabout unless you want to take the first exit. if you want to exit at the first exit then enter the roundabout with your right turn signal on. if you want to take a later exit, then you leave your left signal on until you get to the exit before the one you want to take. just as you pass that exit you turn your right signal on to let others pulling into the roundabout and those behind you know that you intend to turn at the next exit.
the other problem is that americans can't get used to yielding to traffic on their left at an intersection that reminds them of a 4-way stop. i've been sitting at the roundabout in ski time square waiting on someone who is entering on my left. they pull into the intersection, and then stop on my left and motion for me to go. the yield sign confuses people and they think they have to yield to everyone, not just traffic approaching on their left. yield signs at roundabouts should say “yield to traffic on your left.”

the busses make it through just fine. i saw a semi having a tough time the other day. he was over the curbs and into the freshly planted grass.

right on dan,
i said pretty much this same thing in the comments section when stories about this intersection were published earlier this year. this is a colossal waste of money to “improve” an intersection that had no real problems to begin with. the real problem in the mountain area is the intersection at mt. werner and ski time square drive.

its about time. the town where i went to college recycled all plastics in the early 1990's. i've been wondering how long it would take waste management to get on the ball.

sunday sales will eliminate the irate tourists who arrive on sundays only to find they can't purchase a bottle of wine to have with dinner. i'll be glad that i don't have to listen to them gripe about only being able to buy 3.2 beer instead.

if i lived in the steamboat II area, i would vote against this thing for sure. i bet everyone who lives out there would as well. if this many houses are built in that area, the home values in the steamboat II area are sure to take a huge hit.

most of these places can probably be brought up to code. if this apartment had an egress window in the bedroom and a smoke detector, it probably still could have been used as an affordable rental unit. a crackdown on illegal units doesn't mean that they are going to shut them all down and kick the residents out. it means the units need to be brought up to code for safety purposes and registered with the city as a rental.

the town where i went to college had a code enforcement office that visited all rental units in the city at least once a year to make sure that all codes were met. they policed “illegal” units and policed peoples private homes if they saw some code issue. (like indoor furniture on an exterior porch) if a run down old town full of 100+ year old houses and poor college kids can do it, why can't steamboat do it? there is more money here than in most places in the country.
we can't afford to have someone drive around and look for illegal rental units? it is pretty easy to drive past a house and see if a garage looks like someone is living in it. the article says that “the city has records of all registered secondary units.” how hard is it to hand someone a list of all these units and then have them look around for housing units that aren't on the list.

i good idea would be to have a convenience store downtown. when i lived downtown several years ago, i would go to go-fer to buy all kinds of little things that i didn't want to go all the way to safeway or city market for.
