On Trillium House goes solar

This is wonderful that so many have supported the Trillium House Project. Special note goes to the local chapter of the Sierra Club for funding the solar electic panels.
On this note I feel it is important that a clarification is made on what Emerald Moutain Energy does so that the public better understands how renewable energy systems work in the greater sense.
Emerald Mountain Energy is not a “solar energy provider” per se, but rather a company that provides the systems that allow energy (in this case electricity) to be produced on-site (sometimes called “Distributed”power generation) wherever the system is located, avoiding teh need for tranmission of the power. If Emerald Mountain Energy owned the sytem and then sold electricity to the Botanic Park, then they would be a provider of solar-generated electricity, is a manner similar to YVEA who primarily use coal to reliably provide electricity to its co-op members.

Having watched the first Vail match and then this final, I was particularly impressed how the team has gelled, despite some injuries. Much fitter and definitely much more confident in all aspects of th game, the team played nice, error-free rugby. And while it was surely a team effort,I would single out a few impressive performances: the fullback had a great match. Number 3 was everywhere and not to be stopped with ball in hand, and the boot and sweet service of the stand off was something. Well done!

Funny indeed, Tom. I was forced to massage my jaw muscles from laughing so hard. Thank you Cabaret. And it's one of the rare times that, at the risk of sounding like a snob-local, we get to hang out in a room in Steamboat Springs for entertainment where almost everyone is from the area. Great energy.

I agree with Mr Douglas this week: executing convicted felons for any reason is not acceptable. Thank you for sharing your views on this, Rob.

Nice article. But Mr. Douglas diminishes the impact somewhat by harping on Mr. Clinton. While Clinton may be one slippery character with more than a few character flaws, he doesn't relate to the greater goals of the article. And in light of the current dangerously bellicose and cronyistic regime, Mr. Clinton starts to look pretty darn reasonable. Oh wait. The subject of the article was “views”. See what I mean?

This is a hugely valuable effort. Thanks to YV Recycles. It draws attention and actionable means to the fact that in all areas of our lives we must reduce our unnecesssary consumption of resources. Plastic bags are one sore-thumb example.

However it is just a start for most local citizens, and indeed, visitors. While we can pat ourselves on the back for remembering to bring the re-usable bag into the store for our groceries today, we must all look at our own consumption of resources and seek our own ways to do much more. For a really inspiring look at how we got to our uniquely-comsumptive ways, check out the highly praised and award winning http://www.storyofstuff.com/

On Lessons from the lift line

In addition to what happens in the lift line is what happens on the lift. As most of us must ride with people outside our skiing party, this works out to be a big part of our daily enjoyment (or not) up on the hill. I have two suggestions: first, greet those on the lift after loading the chair. You don;t have to talk to them otherwise, but ignoring them completely doesn't seem polite to me. Second, and this is a big one, do NOT drop the bar as you are asking if it is ok to do so. I have myself been hit in the head by the bar more times than I care to remember. I know that this is a peeve for more than just me. In fact I have seen a fight break out after unloading from this, sadly. Ask first, and then only when everyone has replied positively to the request, then bring the bar down slowly. I have taken it upon myself recently to quietly educate people, especially visitors, about this etiquette. And remember, while you may know a lot about getting around up there, many have little or no experience and we would do well to respect them and their needs.
