I think I will continue to get my science from credible sources. This fellow is a complete idiot.

$572! Wow, they are PROUD of their program. Similar programs charge $125-$250. At this rate a class of 17 would generate $97,240! The teacher will need to be paid, (about $22K for 1/2 time teacher) and perhaps a part-time aide for kids that need it, and some materials and supplies, but no other extra costs be incured (the principal is already there, as are the janitors, and the lights and heat are already on) so the justification for this cost would be……

And to address the above comment, the state ,which constitutionally is responsible for public ed provides funding for only 1/2, so now you don't have to think the same as you did before reading this.

A reasonable reserves is 20%. $10 million is way above that.

The district wouldn't “have” to raise all pay, but with the hyper-sensitivity to fairness within the district it would not be politically wise to raise one group and not others. The district has trouble getting new teachers, and that would come up.

BTW-Telluride schools start their teachers at almost $40,000 becuase they know how to both create and manage a school budget. Steamboat schools are almost criminal in both their mismangement and their waste. I wish the board would take a hard, objective look at how (and who) is doing their books.

They are lacking custodians because no will take the job, not lack of funding. If they increase the pay scale for custodians to make it more lucrative, then ALL pays scales would need adjustment.

Which is really what they should do. This district has over $10million in reserves. They won't spend the money on staff or students though.

The laugh factor and lack of accountability in your statement…

You need to be reminded of what century you live in …

I can also add rude and immature.

B4U, thanks for another typical Steamboat reaction: pompous, self-assured (regardless of the facts), complete lack of empathy, vicious. All the lady is doing is asking for the Pilot to follow up with as much zeal as they initially report news, particulary when it causes harm. What comes around goes around, and yours should be headed your way. I hope you handle it with as much grace and class as this woman.

Sorry, for the confusion. I was not referring to the EFB. (I stated the school district had the money, not the EFB.) The school district has the money to both finish the middle school and do the playground. What the heck is the distict doing with 11 million in reserves when there are definite student and safety needs. A prudent reserves is about 20% of operatings expenses. 11 million is crazy. Someone needs to challenge the board. I am currently not residing in Steamboat, or it would be me.

The play structure DID last 20 years, or almost. And yes, they are expensive. And this is no swing set. This is a place for 550 kids to play, and a safe play structure costs money. The district has the money. Please ask for a financial statement that truly shows their reserve. Don't accept verbal numbers. The community would be AMAZED what is locked up in the bank. Millions and millions and millions. And the idea that the district needs this for cash flow is just not true. But that's what you get when ask.

Denial is not just a river in Eqypt

sbvor, would you be impressed if I found the other 7,987 links to studies on global warming, supported by the vast majority of scientists worldwide, that have a different conclusion than the ones you posted?

BTW, global warming has zero to do with the temperature or amount of snowfall Steamboat.

Get a grip and realize that the years of damage done to our planet need to be addressed before it is too late.
