On Losing Triple Crown risky

hubiem-I do know the difference, I just didn't state my point clearly. In the past, the city has sent legions of people out planting annuals in the medians, etc. instead of perennials. I hope they have caught on to that waste of time and money.

On Losing Triple Crown risky

The city could take several cost-cutting measures to save money. One practice that has always confounded me is the scoria clean-up downtown during spring. Sure, the city is responsible for spreading the scoria, but do they really need to spend many machine and man hours to pick it up? Can't individuals rake it up and put it out for pick-up as part of their own clean-up? Planting annuals instead of perennials is another no-brainer. And last but not least, with increasing TC babysittting and clean-up, is there a point of diminishing returns?

On Rancher asks for water funds

The land has been in his family for 123 years and he wants the CO taxpayers to foot the bill to see if he has a "viable reservoir site"! T. Wrong Dickinson has my vote to be President of the Good Ol' Boys Network.

On Triple Crown ordinance shelved

The city should think twice about spending any money on ballfields to benefit TC. The city bowed to pressure from a very small number of special-interest groups to build the terminal at the SS airport. No one questioned what would happen if commercial flights moved to YVRA. Well, they did, and the city is left with a white elephant. A long-term contract with TC is of no use if the company wiggles out of it or goes bankrupt.

On City officials, King to discuss future of Triple Crown

blocal-Did you write the flowery article in the Pilot proclaining the wonderful gathering of the Hell's Angels annual meeting several years ago? We were told that they were going to be bringing their families, their children would be playing in our parks and all would be wonderful. Well, they stabbed a local in the bar, they shot two of their own, they held the medical response team and police at bay and they held the whole town as hostages in a surreal slice of bullying. People make economic sacrifices to live in Steamboat because it's a great place to live. There has always been a built-in caveat of supply and demand. If a business can't make it within this framework, they move on. When Tipple Crown goes and we lose a few restaurants and T-shirt stores, so be it. Steamboat Springs will be a healthier and happier place for those who love it for the right reasons.

On Pamela Daniel: Inform about dangers

I agree with you. I had a bad experience with a tree well in Steamboat a long time ago in another record snowfall year. I fell headfirst into a tree well with a lot of snow following me in. I was able to turn my face up but was still totally covered with snow. I was able to free my upper arm from my pole strap and uncover my face from about 6" of snow. It then took me about a half hour to get out of that predicament. The outcome could have been worse had I gone in face down. Perhaps signage warning of this danger should be posted at the lifts of all ski areas so at least the information is displayed. My condolences.

On Change of address

Clock Tower? Or do you mean the building where Mattie Silk's used to be?

On CMC tuition to rise

"Least expensive in-district tuition option for students in the state...It's pretty cheap out of state for school...we are still the best deal around..." With enrollment at an all-time high, it would seem that the increase in tuition is quite small for all involved. CMC is one of only two out of 15 junior colleges state-wide that receives the majority of its funding from property taxes. I would gladly shift the $600 I pay to CMC towards the RE2 district as I believe we must educate our local kids K-12. I don't think we have a responsibility to subsidize CMC students. "It's already expensive enough to live here as it is".

On Steamboat Snowfall

Wayne Light used to be the unofficial weatherman in Steamboat. He most likely documented all snowfall. If you can find out what became of his records (his descendants or the Tread of Pioneers museum), you most likely would find what you are looking for. The snowfall totals would probably just be for downtown though.

On Steamboat Snowfall

1973-'74 was a memorable year that doesn't seem to get talked about. 454" sticks in my mind. You could really find untracked all day if you knew where to look. The tree runs were much less cut-up than now. One of my best memories was alot of powder on the second- to- last day. Not only were there no turkeys skiing, but most of the locals had already left for the canyons or Mexico and the few remaining bums had all the powd they could ever ski.
