County presses Wall

To tcb: The reason that the Denver SO does not have a patrol division is because it is the "City and County of Denver" which means all of the patrolling is done by the City PD. Routt County obviously extends beyond any existing city limits and thus, a patrol division for the Sheriff's Office is mandatory.

Remembering John Fetcher

I fondly remember John taking - and passing - a CPR class that I taught for the Howelson Hill ski patrollers. He was about 89 at the time, and rest assured if you needed CPR, John would have been able to help you out!

Brent Boyer: Cleaning up our online comments

Some who comment anomymously do so for fear of repercussion from employers, friends or neighbors. I think if Comments are allowed, anonymity should be an option. HOWEVER, the threads do seem to deteriorate quickly away from the topic or issue and become ridiculous rants. I will not miss those bloggers who resort to personal attacks as they will not conform with the new registration policy. It is the website of the Steamboat Pilot and those who want to rant and personally attack can register their own site and blog to their hearts content. The rest of us will be able to post comments that are meaningful and maybe even important.

City: Follow rules on river

No single user group should dictate the use of any public land...that said, each user group should respect the other users. The backcountry skiers and snowmobilers had to work it out, so should the fishermen and tubers. The tube-hatch is relatively brief and the section of river they use is relatively short. The existing laws should absolutely be enforced but I don't think that more restrictions on the tubers are needed. The fishermen can seek out other world-class water just a mile or two up river for the month of July. The reality is that tourism pays the bills in Steamboat and the City and Chamber will continue to market every aspect of the Steamboat summer experience. Tubers, behave yourselves...Fishermen, learn to share the river.

Sales soaring for scooters

I am well aware of that crazy invention called the motorcycle...I have more than 30,000 motorcycle miles under by butt (I am a woman and ride my own, very safely so far). I would rather see every scooter driver be on a real motorcycle.

Sales soaring for scooters

ColoradoNative - I lived in Steamboat for 12 years, long enough to know that the city speed limits are often ignored...and these vehicles are not limited to use within the city. But rest assured, I am not the type to write a comment a month from now to say "I told you so..."

Sales soaring for scooters

I hope everyone who is jumping on the Scooter Bandwagon stops for a minute to realize how dangerous these "totally fun" vehicles are. They are too slow to keep up with traffic and most roads don't have a shoulder wide enough for them to be safely out of the travel lane. Cars can come up on scooters quickly and then must either brake emergently or swerve into oncoming traffic to avoid hitting them...both of these scenarios could have tragic consequences. Remember, the scooter is really no different than a very small motorcycle (thus the need for a motorcycle license) and hundreds of motorcyclists are killed every year because the drivers of the cars, many of whom are distracted while driving, didn't see them. I hope and pray that a scooter tragedy doesn't have to happen in Steamboat before people understand the inherent danger in operating these motor vehicles.
