Martha Drake Young: Biased reporting

Well, we all have our viewpoint don't we! If the paper was truly unbiased and professional in their reporting, they would have done a better job of digging up Bennett's record. They do know about, but have chosen to ignore his personal agenda and aggrandizement during his tenure. The paper has knowledge of a great deal of featherbedding by Bennett so be careful of what you wish for.

Committee collecting signatures to put Steamboat 700 to vote

Would someone please explain to me the problem with providing zoning for new homes in Steamboat! There is plenty of water already adjudicated, the plan complies with West Area Development Plan created by a self appointed committee, nothing well be built until there is demand from customers, and the city won't pay any extortionist fees for anything; the developer will, and nobody is going to move here until they can either starve and ski, or get a good job and raise a family. They are not going to move here because there are empty lots for sale that are not needed. The risk lies solely with the 700 investors! Why should we, the voters, try to save them?

The only reason I can think of anyone resisting 700 is they are in cohots with Lyman Orton and want the 360 Project to be developed first and ruin Emerald Mtn.

Rob Douglas: Practicing gutter politics

Well, well, ybul and steamboat, like so many, you have let your feelings about Gary Wall cloud your judgment. You are no different than Doug Monger, our illustrious commissioner. His animus toward Sheriff Wall is so obvious and overwhelming, he is carrying the county toward the courts.

First, Sheriff Wall is an elected official and by design is to be separated from the whims of the county commissioners. Mr. Monger and Nancy Stahoviak want to micro-manage every department, including that of the elected Sheriff. Their egos are detrimental to good governance. Instead of prioritizing programs and cutting them according to importance, a la the city council or private enterprise, they sit on their bully pulpit and browbeat county employees and department heads.

Second, Monger and Stahoviak cannot legally cut insurance benefits in the Sheriff's without cutting the same benefits of the entire county. In short, they cannot discriminate!

Third, Monger and Stahoviak approved this budget but now want to blame Sheriff Wall.

Fourth, this is a great diversionary tactic. Wasn't it Monger and Stahoviak who thumbed their noses at the voters and built the Justice Center after we voted against it. And what about the $ 400,000.00 over-run they incurred on their watch? Why are Monger and Stahoviak exempt from responsibility? They have spent millions of our tax dollars just because they wanted to!

Isn't it about time to recognize who the real problem is? If this goes to court, Monger and Stahoviak are responsible for incurring unnecessary expenditures, not Sheriff Wall!

Deal angers local loggers

Duke bets, nice try but once again you don't get it! This is a perfect example of government waste in the name of the disadvantaged and expediency. It certainly doesn't represent an open market system and definitely not a system of economic efficiency.

Cari Hermacinski: A spending problem

Mathew, for the record I am a third generation local; a land owner, a business owner, and very involved. Thank you

Cari Hermacinski: A spending problem

Scott, I don't understand your assumption that a property tax would result in a smaller government? Please show me one example of providing more money more consistently and the result is a smaller government!

And to Duke_Bets and JustSomeJoe, Bush conceded to the Democrats and left Obama with the biggest deficit in history! Obama has managed to triple that number in less than one hundred days. As it stands today, each and every person in this country is burdened with a share of the national debt equal to $130,000.00! And, when only about 40% of all Americans pay taxes of any amount, the number is outrageous.

On a local level, Cari Hermasinski is simply standing up for those of us who believe the purpose of government is to provide essential services only. The sales tax does that very easily. Unfortunately, it is the entitlement issues which get the city in trouble. Is it really the function of our city to provide day care for non-working mothers who want to go exercise at their private clubs, or fund an adult basketball league, or provide free concerts, or subsidize the very successful "Strings"?

In short, we locals are sick and tired of the imports justifying their desires of governance and life style by citing examples of such in other cities or counties; probably from their previous homes. Please, if you want taxes to be like they are in the East, New England, California, or Texas, please call Mayflower and make an appointment for them to come get your belongings and go home!

For those of us who do pay income taxes, we are about to get nailed on a national level, so we don't need more unneeded taxes on a local level.

Cari Hermacinski: A spending problem

honestabbe, what a back-handed slap in the face! If you have been at any of the numerous budget meetings, you would know there is a priority list set up by the staff of each department and orderly cuts are to be made in a reverse order of importance. Obviously, snow removal is more important that adult basketball. Unfortunately, the new manager felt it was easier to cut hours worked by 10% than to make cuts. So, the city keeps the freeloaders and discourages the really good employees. It is a perfect example of the insidious nature of government as a whole: it cannot cut back.

Thankfully, Cari is expressing a frustration the majority feels; "that government needs to live by the same rules private enterprise necessarily employs to survive". Townie and his cronies believe more money is always the answer, especially when it is someone else who is providing the money. As a country, we have become socialists in short order and shall be paying a big price. Perhaps, we can at least be responsible on a local level and spend frugally for essential services.

Thank you Cari and all the council who supports thrift!
