Rec center may have led to council losses

to: Honestybestpolicy...aka Leslie Curley...it's absolutely hilarious to read your babble...and to note that barely anyone has taken your bait and responded. Talk about SOUR GRAPES...you need to take a good look in the mirror and remember how poorly you have behaved during this entire debacle and quit blaming the folks that worked very hard to respect the work of expert consultants and years of public input to do what is best for the community as a whole.

Van Fletcher: A strange matter

stirrinuptrouble...
great points about the need for fields. If I'm not mistaken, the $34 million price tag for the rec center includes $500,000 for replacement of fields and I believe the City already has drawings/approval for an additional 2 fields at Heritage - and they have recently done a total re-vamp of the older field at Whistler Park. It's not ideal to have to give up the Ski Town fields but after 28 different sites were evaluated this is what is being recommended as the best location. Let's build it...

Van Fletcher: A strange matter

Might I remind everyone that the City has been operating on a one-legged stool called sales tax for decades and formed a special tax advisory committee a few years ago to determine how best to fund any future capital projects...and the answer that came from this hardworking group of volunteers and experts was to initiate a property tax...like so many other communities across the country. Our City needs to diversify their revenue streams as we continue to grow and change. And the way I see it, building a recreation center will only help to ensure that our beloved sales tax continues to stream in and increase each year...because people will actully continue to enjoy living here and tourists will continue to visit!! Let's build this thing now and give the people of our community a place to recreate together and enhance our already wonderful quality of life...VOTE YES ON 2B & 2C!!!!

Sandy Schwindy: No duplication

What "several items will be duplicated"??? Does Old Town Hot Springs have youth and teen space, gymnasiums, a jog track, an indoor playground, an outdoor skatepark??? NO...they have outdoor water and limited fitness...where youth and teens are not welcome, the equipment is dated and the classes are overcrowed. They simply do not have enough land to accomodate all of the recreational needs that are being unmet! The plan for a municipal-run recreation center has been researched to death and included countless meetings with the folks from OTHS...and the end result is a plan that is doing so much NOT TO DUPLICATE services or put anyone out of business. There are a great many fitness enthusiasts who want a private gym and won't want to be in a family oriented atmosphere. Talk to the residents in Durango who had 7 private fitness clubs against their rec center proposal six years ago...all of these business are thriving and the rec center is getting ready to expand due to overwhelming levels of participation and success. Let's build this thing now and give the families of our community a place to recreate together and enhance our already wonderful quality of life...VOTE YES ON 2B & 2C!!!!

Debbie Wilson: Think ahead on rec

Don't even know where to begin or who's negativism to respond to first...so I'll simply say VOTE YES for something that is sure to be more than a random building used by a select few. The years of valid studies and non-biased research have pointed out the very real fact that the school gyms and private clubs are ALREADY maxed out. Locals don't have the same access that kids already raised here might have had years ago. The number of programs offered (to kids in particular) that encourage exercise and health dwindle each year due to lack of space to provide such programs. Every year MANY kids don't get the opportunity to learn to play basketball, hop on a skateboard in a safe environment, swim indoors in the winter or be cared for in an afterschool club (while their parents work) because the facilities we currently have are FULL or not adequate.

This rec center proposal is not only for NOW but for the FUTURE...it is visionary and thoughtful...it will help maintain what everyone seems to fear we will lose as we continue to grow and change...a sense of place, a healthy community, affordable family fun (yes....at $600 a year if a family uses it only 100 days it will only cost $6.00 for whole family). Considering that 27 babies were born at YVMC in the first 13 days of October I don't think we are quite yet at risk of "driving out the families of Steamboat"...

I say pay now or pay later...the toddlers, youth, teens, adults, seniors and hard working families of our community deserve a REAL community recreation center now...

Debbie Wilson: Think ahead on rec

Great letter Debbie...I for one am voting YES on 2B and 2C...it's about time we pay attention to the VALID surveys and research and provide a facility that will allow for great programming and family fun. This isn't for "hobbies" or a select few...rather, it is designed to provide something for everyone in an effort to provide a healthy outlet and only increase our quality of life. It should be obvious to all the naysayers that this type of recreational facility is inevitable for a community like ours...is every other mountain town/ski resort across the country who has a rec center complaining about lack of participation at their wonderful facilities? No...because locals and tourists alike - of all ages and abilities - use these rec centers, many of which are already looking to expand to meet demand. Sure the price tag is expensive...but it will only increase dramatically the longer we wait! VOTE YES!!
