Our View: Housing flexibility needed

This goes for anyone who relies on socialistic Handouts. It will backfire sooner or later. Overpaid leaders suck the life out of the primary intent while making it against the law for us to create solutions privately.

Year of the crane

Adendim, (pun), I cant help but notice the progress La Farge is making with the batch plant over next to TCC by the James Brown bridge. If you go to

http://www.steamboatvillagebrokers.co...

You will be right in the PDF map and all on 13 new large building projects slated for the Base area re-development alone. These are Mega projects and dont even take into account ongoing development at places like Sanctuary, Sydney peak, Mc kenna ranch, WildHorse, Basicly every thing south of Anglers drive. Do we still think a Gravel Pit (with batch plants) south of SS is a bad idea? Presently the only gravel (products) pit in the area is in Milner. Duckels is buying most of their products from them too. Try to buy anything but sand, topsoil or cobble from Duckels. They will send you packing. Redmond pit out by Stagecoach, has an excelent product for building roads and providing drainage. Not good for batching concrete or asphalt. Look at the road that must be used to transport Redmond materials to South SS areas. RCR 14? Not only are we going to run out of Mined products completely but we are going to be forced to travel farther and farther for Mined Building materials. Not an environmently sound management practice. I have been out of the loop re. future supplies applications and permits but The placement of La Farges new concrete batch plant speaks volumes. In an attempt to save the south valley from gravel pits and or batch plants we are (damning)the entire Highway 40 corridor from Rabbit Ears pass to Milner with unnessary traffic exaserbating the carbon footprint problem. . Then Where??
True LaFarge might have permition to mine gravel south of SS, But no batch plants were authorized. Remember the warm jello? No bowls? Would you like a fork with that? Which eye would you like it in? The people spoke clearly at the last election, Isnt it time the people take an interest in what a few are putting off on all of us with this insane planned shortage of Mined building supplies? How about we the people and the SS Pilot Today put the School board and Howell and Dr. D isues behind us and start some serious inquiry into the underpinnings of these planned shortages of Affordable employee class housing and The Materials to remedy these problems?

Year of the crane

Hi Dimwit
No Im not here to bash you or anyone else. Prefering to keep things peacful, loving and forward looking. I remember the article about Elk habitat up by the SB700 lands. Likely 2008, biggest issue, I am a conservative on global issues and find it better to as they say act localy. The SB 700 could increase density by having duplex, fourplex, and up to 25 unit buildings on 150 to 200 acres instead of 2000 or more single fam homes spread all over 700 acres. Dedicate the northhern most 500 acres to habitat. This would be less intrusive to the land and habitat already there, saving a few million on paving paradise. Also reducing the carbon footprint by 25% or more by having common walls to units, making for fewer exterior walls to heat. 2000 units at 2.5 person average @ unit is 5000 people. Almost half the population of SS and a quarter of the population of Routt CO. I have mentioned in past blog the YVHA hould set aside 100 acres for affordable development. Doesnt have to be all in one spot or happen all at once. Some up by Strawberry Park, some west end, some south valley. larger buildings higher density closer to most present commuters jobs. Instead of building more Quali Runs or the Like keep these units small and simple, easy to heat, building green etc. Everyone wins except those who would prefer a planned shortage of affordable housing to enhance their greed for equity financial gains. We really are all in the same BOAT here, we need to start caring for our selves, each other, the environment and the animals who were after all here first. They may be a little lower on the food chain, but where would we be witout them? What does it mean to be a steward? So we reduce the # of miles commuted saving fuel lives and reducing carbon footprint. Save heating requirements with density, lowering carbon footprint, save land and habitat. If the warming issue is sunspots, well at least we did the best we could as stewards rather than being of a bunch of greedy, fill in blank.

Howell tapped to lead YVHA

Dim wit makes the point loud and clear by saying, "Lots of action and no movement. We have a planned shortage of service community housing !!! (I would beg to call it affordable.) In past notes here I have criticized the preservation of the So. Valley and the YV Land Trust. I think the YV Housing Authority is a sham because they could have long ago been as successfull as the Land trust, By the purchase and set aside of only 100 acres of land for a planned free market community of say 25 units or more @ acre ranging from 300 sq. ft. studio, to 900 sq. ft. 3bd 1 bath units. Thats 2500 units People !! Built for $200@ sq. ft. $60k to $180k @ unit. Thats 25 units in one building on halfe an acre with the other halfe acre for parking and green belt. There wouldnt be a Service community housing shortage for the next 10 years. We would have BUS Drivers !!! Think of the reduced carbon footprint from people who now are risking their lives driving 17 to 40 miles each way daily Paying $300 @ month of their hard earned dollard just for GAS? A plan like this would break all the RULES of engagement. Thereby getting something DONE. The political appointees would have DONE their job and be forced to move on to some other engagement, having taught the rest of us how its done. This would not be good politics. Keep up with the planned shortage and preserve the NEED for a housing authority. What we get is River Walk. The other $400k plus @ unit development by Super8. Im not an authority on Anything, but I know the simple rules of supply and demand. Keep the demand high, keep the supply low, Keep the working Stiff on the Highway. The working people in this area must have sore septums from being lead around by the nose-ring. Stop being cattle.

Routt County road tax voted down at polls

Cats if I remember right the permit was only for materials, no mixing plant for concrete. So La Farge should truck sand etc. over to Milner to batch concrete? Heres your jello, Sorry, we are out of bowls.

Routt County road tax voted down at polls

Look who is paying for the short sightedness of our county officials. Us and Them. They thought they could slow growth by making supplies scarce. All they have done is eliminate competition in the rescourses supply side and increase competition for those supplies. Sure the cost of supplies for roads and bridges have gone up. Where there should be 4 or 5 scources in competition there is only 1. The only winners are those greedy and self serving people who oppose new scources of road building materials at ANY cost just to preserve their View? Maybe we need to put these issues in the hands of common sense voters and quit trusting biased, short sighted officials. 70% of the truck traffic through downtown could have been mitigated as well, reducing the local carbon footprint and relieving a lot of traffic congestion on 40. Now La Farge is setting up next to TCC when they should be south of town where MOST of the DEMAND is. Tired of seeing concrete trucks running through town? Thank your County Govt.

How about put it on Skip Wise park, bridge the Yampa over to the island by the gazebo and put some of it there too, we could capture the warm water leaving the current Health and rec. to biuld it green. And the city already owns the land over by existing Parks and rec. so there is room for parking. This could connect the existing Health and rec., all the way to the Ice rink. Complimenting the entire area with more of what is already there. A lot could be done there with 37Mil. Best of all a river already runs through it!! Fishing anyone? This I could vote for esp. if the tax was county wide. Then pay me the fees those other rocket scientists ripped us off for. Yea I know, Im dreaming. At least I dream BIG!

Before you vote yes on the rec. center go to ski town park and have a look. Imagine all the things on the rec. center list in that field. Then try to imagine the parking lot to accomodate this rec. center. Then try to imagine 2 years form now and we have overgrown this facility and esp. its parking lot. Now imagine overflow parking running up and down hwy 40 on the shoulder. Ski town park is not big enough for a structure 4 times the size of Wallmart and have room left for parking. If we manage to stuff it all in there and 2 years from now it isn't big enough, to where do we expand this facility and its overflow parking? Ski Town park is a land locked area. No room to grow. So prevent another white elephant. If you dont believe me on this go to the Health and Rec. and look at how much land IT requires for its structures and parking. Then imagine all that on little ole Ski Town Park. It just wont fit. No matter who uses it, Sorry. How much did we pay those advisors who reccomended this? We didnt get our moneys worth. This is not rocket science.

JQ Public
Now you are peaking out against reverse socialism. People of so. routt paying for something that others will benefit from. A lot of commuters come from so. routt to work here. here is the closest shopping. Drop the kids at the rec center and do errands. Stop at the rec center for a workout before going home to so. rt. They will too use it and I would be for it if some of the inequatable issues were addressed. The present rec center is used by people from all over routt county and Moffat etc. The way this is being presented, the price tag is just too high, no matter who uses it. Sorry.
