Students fight bullying in the halls of Steamboat Springs High School

Bullying is bullying, plain and simple. Yes, the SSSD doe's have a policy on bullying. After Columbine, the SSSD was mandated to put a policy together. The peer mediation is garbage! It works badly and anything short of a restraining order, not well! The parent, child, school co-operative formula is not very consistent or effective.
Why be judged by peers that already have prejudices against the people they over see! It's like a band aide on a gaping wound. The sociological environment at our schools is hostal, if you have a disability or just don't fit with the "IN" kids. Your in or out or nothing! The nothings get bullied by everyone. This is just shrugged as kids will be kids. Yah, right!
There are a lot of good kids, parents and SSSD employees trying hard to combat this, but they need help. It's still a huge problem and those who are helping are sinking!

Does Steamboat's isolation impact social views?

The only bubble I see here is age. Give anyone of these good kids time to work and breath a little more, the sociological aspects of their issues will be opened to them. Some do see things as they are. We should maybe listen.

Bus driver shortage unnerves some

pt22- I believe you are right about the interview process of the paper. Good journalism starts with a good investigator behind the pen who has the talent to get the paint for the whole picture of things.

To All: The transportation issue has been addresses by the Pilot in some parts. Pulling people in from over seas is one issue. Enough pay for drivers is another. Finding people who can pass a drug test is a big problem, when you do find someone who can fill a position. The cost of living in Steamboat that is aliened with the cost of transportation here is a major deterrent as well! I have driven SST and School busses as well as resort shuttles as a second full-time job along with my day full-time job. Most people today do not have the work ethic or the stamina to do so. I have done this for over 17of my 25+ years in Steamboat, in order to survive. I work 55 to 65 plus hours a week as of current. I'm not even 20-30 or even 40 something anymore! I believe our shortage in transportation has a tiny bit to do with the change in the way people look at work as well. The last 30 years has proven that in this country. The labor shortages in this town continue in many aspects of the Steamboat labor market, not just in transportation. The compaction for labor has been absorbed by construction, that may I add, pay's well at $18.00 to $21.00 an hour to start! Who wants to work for $11.00 or even $15.00 an hour? The 20 something year old who wants to come here and play? Maybe. The guy who wants to stay here and raise a family? Only if he's lived here awhile. For those who live here that don't live on trusts or inherited wealth, the cost of rent and gas is a key element in their survival. I don't see any of those components getting cheaper anytime soon! Immigration? Well, I won't visit that issue. What I do see coming? Well, businesses will have to diversify their staffs to accommodate shortages by working longer hours and extended pay and bonuses, just to survive. And just like in the 80's, management will have to step out of their offices, middle managers will share more work with their workers and so on down the labor ladder, to make it all work out. If the country slides into a recession, the demand for labor will dwindle off hence, the labor shortages may go away. How knows! Thanks for letting me share. So there you have it from someone who's working the trenches of the Steamboat labor market for 25+ years.
