Steamboat Briefs: Hayden man killed in rollover Wednesday night

Once again another Routt Co. residence loses his life because he wasn't wearing his seat belt. I don't understand people's thinking when there is over 50 years of proof that seat belts save lives, especailly in one car roll overs by holding people in their seats while the rest of the car gets battered and wrecked. The passenger section of all cars is designed to hold together in such accidents, providing "room to live" through the accident. One more sad lesson for others to learn from.

Dr. Linda Halteman Lewis: What are we so afraid of?

We clearly need health insurance reform; but just as clearly we don't need government run health care. Every program the govenment runs is inefficient, ineffective and bankrupt, and so will govenment run health care.

The fear of rationing of health care is very real. You can't suddenly have 40 million more people with health insurance with no increase in doctors, health care workers, and health services without suddenly having the whole system badly backlogged. What are 40 million more people with health insurance going to do with it - of course, they're going to use it. Especially those that have huge medical problems because they have been abusing their bodies with alchohol, drugs, cigarettes, and/or excessive calories.

OktoberWest marks end to flurry for Chamber

I think the mainsteet summer events this year benefited hugely from the completion of construction downtown (a side benefit of the housing collapse I suppose). Without the ugliness, the dust, the congestion, the machinery noise, it was a lot more pleasant being downtown this summer. Last summer I avoided coming downtown, but this summer I came to most of the events and very often stayed downtown for a evening meal.

Heres hoping that the base area landscape improvements at the ski area can be completed quickly. It was ugly yesterday at OctoberWest down where headwall used to be. That sort of construction ugliness has an impact on people's enjoyment of scheduled activities. I'm not against needed reconstruction, but we need to understand the impact of our "visual polution" on tourists and visitors who come here to enjoy themselves and spend their money.

Our View: Pot ordinance goes too far

Apparently the SP&T has not been following the results of undercover investigations of California dispensaries showing clearly that these establishments are doling out marijuana to any pot head that walks in, coughs a few times, tells them now much he's in pain, and requests a few lids. No problem, here's a month's supply. Do we really want to follow California's lead and become an attraction for pot heads all over the country. I think not. We need severe restrictions on these dispensaries. I think anyone who gets medical marijuana should have a doctor's prescription.

Bill Kipper: I don't get it

It's all part of the rapid decline in our culture, lead by entertainers, TV and numerous others in our society that now think that "anything goes". If you think your incident is bad, you ought to see what it's like in the bigger cities of America. Fortunately, Steamboat still has some of the last vestiges of a respectful, courteous society. That's why a lot more people will come here to live.

Fewer inmates staying at jail

It will be interesting to see if the number of people skipping out on their scheduled court hearings goes up. I suspect it will. Hope the Pilot will do its duty by tracking and reporting the results of this change. In other states they have been doing this with illegal aliens and then wonder why they never show up for their hearings. Duh!

Kat Kelly: Wildlife in town a beautiful sight

Some nice thoughts about wildlife, which I agree with, but it is still dead wrong to leave garbage out where it will attract bears and other critters. If we do not use bear proof containers, we need to keep our garbage inside an enclosure that critters cannot enter. If we leave our "harmless" garbage out where it will attract bears, some idiot will eventually shoot the bear, and then we will be sad, but it will be partially our fault.

Man admits to killing bear

I would say that a fine of $5000 and 30 days in jail to think about what he did would be about right.

Bear shot in downtown Steamboat

The DOW needs to offer a reward for turning the shooter in. Someone will know who did this.

Steamboat happy hours

A lot of folks in SBS enjoy happy hour socializing without ever getting behind the steering wheel. If you do, you are likely to pay the price, which is huge. SBS has the best DUI enforcement I have ever seen. Just read The Record each day.
