Intrawest focuses on helmets

Helmets are a good step. Getting drunks off the slopes by stopping the sale of alcohol (or at least not promoting Jager-shots at 4-points) would make it a lot safer out there.

Soda Creek principal to take extended leave

Judy - wishing you strength in your fight.

And maybe I don't understand, but since we have two principles at SPE and Soda needs one for a couple of weeks, why don't they just split up with one at Soda and one at SPE during this time?

Educational services provider asks school districts for funds

What is the magnitude of the undercharges in terms of percentage of the overall BOCES budget? Without knowing this, it is hard to know how much of an error this is.
I don't see why BOCES budget should be much different than a school district's budget with the vast majority of funds going to salary/benefits and the next biggest slice to facilities.
If this $754,000 in undercharges represents 5%-10% of BOCES budget, then it is more plausible to believe that it is due to bad financial information internally. But if this is more like 50% of BOCES budget, then you would think that the BOCES administration and board should have caught this much earlier with just a moderate amount of fiscal oversight. It seems that they were not budgeting but just watching cash flow, which can be a big problem.
So, can the SP&T find out what percentage this is of BOCES budget?

Our View: A lost opportunity

the thing is they didn't request anything. Parents weren't notified either way, so we didn't know.

As for needing consent to watch the president, I completely agree with you - silly.

Our View: A lost opportunity

Only one child from SPE went to the speech because the others were told that their parents had not given prior consent even though the parents didn't know they were supposed to.

Our View: A lost opportunity

Except the students at Strawberry Park (I don't know about Soda creek) did not get to watch unless they had prior permission from their parents, which is not so bad if the parents had been informed of this. The only thing I heard about it was from the SP&T article that said all students would be allowed to watch it if they chose, so I told that to my children. My middle schooler did and my elementary kids at SPE were not allowed but came home with permission slips to watch it on Thurdsay.

They will watch it on Thursday and we are discussing both the speech and the controversy at home.

The president, by virtue of being the rightfully elected president of the US, has earned the right to talk to the nation (including the students), no matter the political party.

Routt County schools prepare for Obama speech

This is the President of the US. Sad that we are treating him like an internet stalker who might say something lurid to our children while we are not listening. No matter what the political party, the President deserves a modicum of respect and that message that our nation needs an educated populous is always important. Hearing this from the President can have a different impact on a child then hearing it from his/her parents/teachers/etc. has. I told my children they could go listen to it at school and that we would have it recorded at home to listen to together tonight.

And I love that parents are the most upset about this when we have little idea what is actually being said to our children each day in class. If parents are going to get in an uproar bout what their kids hear in school, they should demand to know the curriculum, read the textbooks, sit in on class occasionally and talk to their kids about what they are being taught.

District's first Montessori students finish program

It is highly disappointing after all these years to still be misquoted by the Pilot about the Montessori program.

The group who worked hard to start the public Montessori program has always felt that Montessori is an excellent method of education and one that our children were thriving in. They have continued to thrive in the public Montessori program.

It is great that our district has the Montessori option along with more traditional classrooms so that each family can chose what they believe will be the best fit for their child(ren).

There is no need and has never been any need to determine if any educational method is 'better' than any other. We have great schools and great teachers (traditional and Montessori) who all work hard to support all the children.
