Call me "old school", closed minded, whatever but I for one don't like the new format. For one the font is to small, two it no looks like every other e newspaper and three I don't know what a "django" is nor do I have any interest in learning about Ellington CMS or whatever that is.And what is an avatar? (other then a new movie by James Cameron due out soon). Why can't things just be left alone, if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Why can't king Obama just use the stroke of his pen. Executive Order No.1 "All legal Citizens of the USof A are now covered by the same insurance as the US Congress." no arguing ,dicussion, case closed, end of story. Next case!
msred -- Perhaps because when Ben and Jerry started out in the '70's after trying to hit college towns in the south and other warm climates they settled on Burlington VT. (north and cold) as a headquarters. No competition. They only sell about a billion dollars a year of ice cream. On another note their CEO and upper escheoln's pay is based on a percentage on the lowest paid individual in the company. Maybe Wall St. should take heed.
Seeuski- not that I have to justify myself to you, but yes I paid my waitstaff more then twice the minumum wage. Also when I was back east and doing home renovation work, if I bid a job for 5 days work and my crew finished the job in 4 days they got paid for 5 days work. That's called incentive.
To borrow a phrase from the late Paul Harvey "for what it's worth " here is my take on the union talk. First, if Jimmy Hoffa was around during the air traffic controllers strike he would have banded all unions together and shut the country down (no rail no trucks no air) nothing would have moved until the controllers got their jobs back. As for Wal-mart how many products do the sell come from American workers? As for Toyota much of there payroll savings come from using robots(how about jobs) the robots undoubtably built overseas. Wall St. doesn't need a union because they have Uncle Sam throwing money at it. When big business needs to protect it's interest it's called lobbying. When workers need to protect their interest it's called a union. (same thing) If anyone thinks corporations will pay top dollar for employees out of the goodness of their hearts I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. That's the reason for minimum wage. Bosses always want to go as cheaply as they can. Fred when you bid a job don't you have to pay union scale so the state can compare apples to apples, you just get more production out of your guys compared to union workers? I'd produce twice the work for twice the pay. Back to Safeway. It made a billion with a "B" dollars last year. Prices are lower then they have been in years. Is this because Safeway is cutting into it's own profits and want to be nice guys? of course not They are squeezing the farmers and suppliers and employees. I could carry on and on but it would be futile . It's not socialism or facsism it called capitalism and we all want our fair share. Why could the American family live on one salary when we were kids and today it takes 3 salaries just to break even?
I guess it all makes sense now . Danny will be building on the west side of town and the gravel will come from the east. Great idea!!! Hope the work on Lincoln will hold up to the weight. Proves you don't have to be a rocket scientist to make decisions in this town
Scott-- I think that part of the problem with becoming informed wether it is SB700 or the Presidential election is two fold. One is trying to get unbiased information and the other is the reading comprehension of the person trying to become informed. I'm not saying people are stupid but not everyone gets a 1600 on their SAT's. There is a reason people hire lawyers in order to close on their house. Someone needs to interpret what is in all those documents. Same thing with SB700,at 665 pages information that gets reduced to a few talking points can be slanted in any direction the writer choses. Good bad or otherwise it seems this and other discussions on SB700 seem moot since the vote was last night and it passed. Time to move on
I'm neither lying or in denial. Just stating the facts as they should be. If the tradesman would get together and stick to universal pricing the developers wouldn't have a cheaper bid to chose from, they would all be comparable, and then it would come down to skill and workmanship. Quality would be improved because the bozo clowns who do shoddy work would be weeded out. That's why in the old days there were apprenticeships and it took years to learn your craft. Today anybody with a hammer and a DVD can learn how to build stuff in a weekend. That doesn't make him a carpenter.
I gotta agree with John. I said the same thing about the googles in the Rockies lockerroom. What a bunch of sissy's. OH the champange stings my eyes. Can you imagine Joe Dimaggio complaining about that. Do you think big tough guys that played under Vince Lombardi would say something like that. They would have been laughed right out of the stadium. Picture a burly iron worker ordering a pink squirrel in a bar. yeah right ok.
Flotilla -"whatever contractors are cheapest. " that's half the problem with everything in the world. When you break your arm or leg do you shop around for the cheapest Dr. to set the bone. no. when you have a toothache do you find the cheapest Dentist? no. These guys have fees that are known as reasonable and customary. When was the last time a carpenter said "we get $1,000.00 to hang a door because it is reasonable and customary." If carpenters stuck together with their pricing Home Depot couldn't undercut other bids and everyone could make money.
