I think it is about time Steamboat Springs elects a mayor. A city manager trying to please 7 bosses is impossible. A mayor could stay focused on a vision for the city without being afraid he would be fired. Citizens could recall a mayor just like counsel.
The bicycle rider should be cited for running the red light in my opinion. The poor guy driving the truck will have to suffer emotional scars from this mans stupid mistake. As a bicycle rider I am offended that the SSPD did not give the guy a ticket.
Great to hear from these long time locals! As one who's been here 33 years I can remember in the not to distant past a year where the ski area closed and we got over 6 more feet of snow! I can also remember it snowing on top of the mountain on the 4th of July! Everybody had jackets on at the parade! I have seen it snow on the mountains every month of the year!

The way that Old Town is platted means that some of the residents along Pine St will loose their off street winter parking bacause that is where the sidewalk will go. The lots are actually two lots, one facing Pine and the other facing the alley. In many cases different people own one but not the other. The City will take away the only parking these people have. What will that do to their property values? The City needs to focus on uncompleted projects such as burying the powerlines in the downtown commercial district. They also should put sidewalks along Oak and Yampa where we want people to walk and spend money. Just look at how responsible the City is with sidewalks. They knew that they would have to replace the sewer line between Stockbridge and Shield Drive but they put a sidewalk in on the bike path only to tear it out two years later and replace it. It's clear that the water department doesn't communicate with Parks and Rec. What a waiste of money. The City needs to refocus on what is really needed and leave the trees and off street parking alone on Pine St.
Who gets to vote on the rec center? Anyone registered to vote in Steamboat Springs. Who gets to pay for the rec center? Only the property owners in Steamboat Springs. Vote no!
I don't understand why the city is starting with sidewalks on Pine St. Yampa and Oak St. make more sense. That is where we want people walking and spending money. The city wants to put in 6' sidewalks, remove over 30 mature trees, many of them Spruce, the state tree. Then they plow snow onto these sidewalks and expect the property owners to clear the snow. The property owner then must accept liability and replacement cost when the sidewalks crack from freezing and thawing. There are many small homes that would not be able to utilize current off street parking because the 6' sidewalks will take that away. Paint bike lanes on Pine St. It won't cost so much. But then the city loves to throw money away.
