On Strings celebrates new venue with gala concert

Amen, mtnsmith, and congratulations to Kay, Betse and all of those who dreamed and planned and worked their butts off to give us this new venue. Every new building will have its glitches, and this one is no exception, but they'll work them out. Encore!

On Emerald development proposed

Wait just a minute! How can Towny Anderson be both the Director of Historic Routt County and the representative of a developer who wants to desecrate historic Emerald Mountain? This stinks.

On Streetscape consultants plan revitalized downtown

The elephant in this living room is a potential by-pass. If there is a by-pass (enormous cost and controversy notwithstanding), then this streetscape plan will work splendidly. I saw the presentation and was impressed. However, if a by-pass does not make it onto the drawing board, then Lincoln Avenue, with its 7 under-used lanes, will be the most attractive alternative. I just don't see how a major through-highway can coexist with the new streetscape. I hope the consultants have a plan for that eventuality, too.

On Main Street makeover

Adding a light at 11th is a good idea. Eliminating the light at 8th is a bad idea. Too many people are used to crossing at 7th, 8th and 9th to get them to walk an extra block to cross safely. They'll just try to dash between cars as they do now at 4th, 6th, 10th and 11th. Why trade one dangerous intersection for another?

On Our view: Council should end Harwigs gatherings

Steve Ivancie's previous Council majority regularly conducted business out of the public eye, and it regularly pre-arranged its votes on important issues. The Harwig's sessions may be unwise, but Steve's arguments are hypocritical.

On Knezevich’s renewal uncertain

The way that the school district handles personnel decisions is simply disgraceful, regardless of the merits of any individual decision. What professional educator would want to work in such a demeaning environment?

On Study eyes local economy

The presentation showed that second homes, which account for more than 50% of our residences, pay 4% of our sales taxes. So that means our current tax system has those who can least afford it paying lots (4.5% sales tax on food, utilities, etc.) and those who can most easily afford it paying almost nothing. Ya think it's time to create a tax system for THIS century?

On City prepares for tough annexation negotiations

One huge difference between Granby and Steamboat is that Granby has a property tax and therefore was annexing properties that would be sharing the town's bills. Steamboat has no property tax and, therefore, its only reason for annexing anything is the employee housing.
