I remember when the night sky ALWAYS looked that way in Steamboat. Here's a thought, Rob- move back to the I-95 corridor and take a few Triple Crown loving friends with you. Then StmBt could start looking the way it used to.

Very well reasoned and said, Scott. My recollection is that City's Council promise to keep TC out of Emerald Park was discussed at a council meeting, in maybe '93-94 and there should be minutes of that meeting or meetings. It was definitely discussed at multiple Parks & Rec Commission meetings. I believe what Council said was there could be no use of Emerald Park for tc unless an alternate access route (other than Pamela Lane) to the park was developed. If use of Emerald Park is that critical to TC, let them come up with the million plus bucks needed to install a new RR crossing on the S. side of the hotel.
To those who wonder what the big deal is, there's a huge difference between 3 or 4 trains a day going through, that take maybe a minute each to pass, and the kind of traffic jam and gridlock that accompanies most TC events. How would the Pamela Lane critcs like to be trapped in or out of THEIR neighborhoods several times a week for 10 weeks in the summer ?? Not to mention the general compatibility of parade-volume traffic coming in and out of a residential neighborhood. And, yes, I did used to live on Pamela Lane- had no trouble adapting to the trains but still hate the TC gridlock, wherever I encounter it.
As to Scott's bigger picture, I agree completely that the StmBt economy has grown diverified and strong enough that, even without a property tax, the City does not need events on the scale of TC (i.e. 4 day invasions of hordes of SUVs for 2-3 months/summer) to continue providing the level of services and amenities that both old and new residents have come to expect. When ALL the costs of TC are factored in (including demand on City services), is the social disruption of an otherwise extremely enjoyable place to live really worth it? By the way, I do not believe this is a class warfare arguemnt; it's more a matter of scale. If 13,000 skiers a day all drove their SUV's to Howelson Hill twice a day, the gridlock would be just as annoying. And I'll repeat my observation that I've had friends and family who had the misfortune to come to town during big TC weeks who universally said “What the *&#! - never again”. I wonder how many of those folks, who are more than willing to spread some of their money around, are going elsewhere just because of TC?

Greed is an insidious thing. But if residents would rather tolerate the TC crowd than reach into their own pockets to pay a property tax, that the City of StmBt Springs and more far-sighted residents of the town have been advocating for a couple of decades now (remember the 3 legged stool analogy? right now it's got 2 and one them is called Triple Crown), the results are entirely predictable. And contrary to Mr. Rob's assertions, a single entity or event does not have to replace TC over night- who's in town when TC ISN'T here?Any of them spending any money? How many more of THEM would come if they didn't have to put up with the TC crowds? Aspen, Vail, Breckendridge, Telluride all seem to do just fine in the summer without TC. Just a thought…

Some folks just don't get it- its the crowds in their Excusrions and Yukons and Suburbans and other land yachts that TC brings that create the problems. How many times has this town ever been gridlocked due to 13,000 skiers in town?? None that I can recall. If 10,000 skiers were all descending on Howelson at the same time as happens with every TC event that would be a holy mess too.

Here's what I'm always wondering: How many people who choose not to pay for health insurance have ski passes, cars less than 10 years old, memberships at the health club, golf passes, take expensive vacations to exotic locations, have the latest, greatest stereo, TV and mtn bike, eat out at resturants regularly, have a garage full of toys, etc.? Why the hell should those of us who pay for OUR health insurance also pay for theirs?? Through a program administered by the US Gov't??? Give me a break!!

It's ski town, usa, not BALL town!!! TC will ALWAYS want more. Enough is enough. Send 'em packing and take our town back! Maybe some of my friends and relatives will start coming back in the summer- you know the ones who've been here on TC wknds and said “never again!!”

Great move getting Weber back in the trenches- he peter principled out 10 years ago, not to mention he couldn't keep any competent engineers- hard to work for a bozo. Get rid of Wilson, the other dictator for life and triple crown shill, and maybe StmBt has a chance to save its soul.

ditto bcpow- if Council hadn't caved in to trophy home owners S & E of town, at least the delivery bottleneck wouldn't be a problem. NIMBYs always just make it someone elses problem.

I've been saying for years, how many people does the TC crowd drive AWAY from Stmbt every year??? Every friend or family member who's ever had the misfortune to visit during a TC weekend for starters! Thanks Bob, for your usual insightful perspective and ability to see the big picture. It's skitown usa, not balltown usa!! Dave King will never be satisfied.
