Would it be possible to have a bigger picture that shows more of the statue?

Steamboat Pilot: can you give a little more background re:”complained about the manner in which Lanning has handled certain situations, including signage citations given to local Realtors” .
-What are the current signage rules?
-What kinds of violations are being given citations?
-Are all Realtors getting citations or only a few? And if only a few is that due to favoritism or because only a handful are breaking the law?

Instead of reporting a lot of gossip and hearsay, how about providing some background and some facts once in a while so readers can become better informed and form their own opinions on issues?

I am curious to know what the regulations are for rentals in Steamboat. I would assume that if a condo is being used as a legal rental unit, that it would have safe. Are there requirements for smoke and CO detectors in nightly/weekly rentals?
I moved from a state where even in the 1980s, a fire inspection certificate had to be presented at a house closing to verify that working smoke detectors existed in the house being sold. The law has been expanded to include CO detectors. This state also requires CO and smoke detectors for every rental unit in the state.
Not a bad idea for Colorado and Steamboat if it doesn't already exist.

I agree completely. What is very sad but true is the comment above that qualified people will be reluctant to take paid and volunteer positions in this town due to immature comments and mudslinging that is disseminated primarily through the comments section of this newspaper. I would like to see the Steamboat Pilot modify this 'comments' section and monitor it more closely. I see that inappropriate remarks are removed periodically. Perhaps if ALL comments were reviewed before being allowed to be seen by all readers it would raise the quality of discussion here. Actually it may make it possible to have more actual discussion and less grandstanding by a few vocal individuals.

I have no children in the school district so most of what I know, I have learned from reading the newspaper. I have been amazed at the level of pettiness or ignorance or maybe just incompetence, shown by Board members in recent years. When I read that there was a delay in renewing this man's contract I assumed it was his first year on the job and perhaps more time was needed to evaluate his work. But when I learned from reading today that not only has he been in the job for three years, but was assistant for six years previously, I am flabbergasted. The Board is responsible for overseeing the professionals in the district. What have they been doing for the last nine years? Why was this person kept for six years in a prior position, then promoted, then kept for three years if there were questions about his qualifications? If questions came up only this year why wasn't the Board working to sort things out before the last minute? School jobs are cyclical and how is this man going to get a new principal job for the coming year now? And what kind of replacement principal are you going to find in June? And what person with good sense would even consider working in the Steamboat Springs School District after learning about the Mickey Mouse antics of the board and opinionated parents with chips on their shoulders? I hate to think the town will be paying out more money due another poor decision of the board in personnel issues, but it sounds like this man may have a very reasonable argument for compensation.

Although a family may spend a lot on a ski vacation, checking flight schedules is often the first step ( at least it always has been for my family). People have limited times to travel to avoid pulling kids out of school. If the flight cost is higher than for other areas or if there are no flight times to suit the days people can travel, they will go elsewhere. Don't forget that these airlines that are raising rates due to fuel are also charging for checked bags now. So if the cost is up $800 per family for fuel and another $200-300 for the bags and skis, and rather than a direct flight, a connection/changeover is required, it all adds up to looking at alternatives.
Also, the dollar is cheap for those living overseas, I would think that marketing efforts should be directed at getting more foreign travelers to Steamboat and cutting flights from international hubs is not the way to go.

I think the upcoming year may be a difficult one as well. Fuel cost increases will affect airline tickets. The recent announcements that charges will be made for each checked bag will hit families traveling with ski gear. When a higher airfare is combined with higher lift ticket costs and the costs of food and housing, this may be the year for families' discretionary dollars to be spend closer to home and not in the Yampa Valley.

I hope Mr. Goode is a better coordinator than economic historian. The Consumer Price Index goes back (in the US) to the 1880s when the Bureau of Labor was asked to compile information relating to the impact of tariffs, and has been published annually by the Bureau of Labor Statistics since 1921. Whatever grassroots activities may have taken place in Michigan 35 years ago would have been made much easier had someone just asked the BLS.

A lot of traffic from the Yampa Valley Airport to Steamboat would be eliminated if a low cost bus were available between the airport and downtown Steamboat. An Alpine Taxi ride is over 30 dollars per person for the one way ride. I made the trip about ten times between mid December and early January picking up and dropping family and friends. It would have been sixty dollars for one couple to get to Steamboat, so I drove out and back. If a cheap bus were available to get them to town, I would have just picked them up here. There is a parade of all the cars out and all the cars back to meet each flight. The only one benefiting is the police car that waits for speeders along that route.
