Zach Fridell was hired as the education reporter for the Steamboat Pilot &
Today in May 2008. He grew up in Manhattan, Kan., before earning a
bachelor's degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston,
Ill. During college, Zach worked with the Medill Innocence Project to help
free men who were wrongly convicted of murder. Zach also worked for the
Daily Northwestern and as an intern for The Florida Times-Union in
Jacksonville. After graduating, Zach began working for an English-language
newspaper in Phuket, Thailand, where he wrote and edited copy for one year
before moving to Steamboat.
When not at the office, Zach enjoys traveling, reading, finding new music and
mountain biking. Although Zach has only been snowboarding once before moving
to Steamboat, he looks forward to spending time outdoors and learning to
enjoy snow.

As much as $200 stolen from auto shop in nighttime burglary

A break-in Wednesday night left one local auto business with a few hundred dollars less in the till. Penny Burch, manager of Doc’s Auto Clinic on Copper Ridge Drive, walked into the business at about 7 a.m. Thursday and discovered the door open and the cash drawer missing.

The first estimate from the Colorado Department of Education indicates the South Routt School Board could face cuts of about $221,000, a little more than 6 percent. At a meeting tonight, the board will take the first steps in preparing for the hit.

The season’s first major snowfall was to blame for a slew of car crashes and slide-offs Friday, but police reported no serious injuries. Meanwhile, weather forecasters say at least a couple more inches of snow could fall today and tonight.
