Zach Fridell was hired as the education reporter for the Steamboat Pilot &
Today in May 2008. He grew up in Manhattan, Kan., before earning a
bachelor's degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston,
Ill. During college, Zach worked with the Medill Innocence Project to help
free men who were wrongly convicted of murder. Zach also worked for the
Daily Northwestern and as an intern for The Florida Times-Union in
Jacksonville. After graduating, Zach began working for an English-language
newspaper in Phuket, Thailand, where he wrote and edited copy for one year
before moving to Steamboat.
When not at the office, Zach enjoys traveling, reading, finding new music and
mountain biking. Although Zach has only been snowboarding once before moving
to Steamboat, he looks forward to spending time outdoors and learning to
enjoy snow.

A Steamboat Springs man arrested in a December raid was sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to possession of a machine gun and possession of and intent to distribute cocaine.

Last-day voters weigh in

Elections officials have now collected more than 620 ballots today

More than 850 people have dropped of ballots or voted as of 6 p.m. today, Routt County election officials said. Anyone who still needs to vote must deliver a ballot to the Routt County Courthouse in downtown Steamboat Springs by 7 p.m.

The town of Oak Creek has until Dec. 31 to update its comprehensive plan, giving new direction and guidance to the city government. The comprehensive plan, created in 1996, was designed to be used as guidance for town policies.

South Routt's Jim Iacovetto dies at 96

Jim Iacovetto, eldest son of family patriarch Sam Iacovetto, could be found around the South Routt area wearing his denim overalls, his denim jacket and his strong work ethic. As an engineer on the railroad for 43 years, Jim Iacovetto was part of a South Routt tradition of an involved family that shaped many aspects of early Phippsburg. Iacovetto died Oct. 25 in Grand Junction. He was 96 years old and had lived in Delta County for the past 35 years.

Standoff ends without injury

A police standoff that lasted nearly four hours early Friday on Laurel Lane ended peacefully after police broke down a door and arrested a 33-year-old Steamboat Springs man. Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were called to a report of domestic violence on Laurel Lane at about 12:45 Friday morning.
