Jack Weinstein joined the Pilot & Today in May 2009 as the newspaper's education reporter. Before that, Jack worked for more than two years at The Olathe (Kan.) News, the last six months as news editor after more than a year and a half as a reporter covering city and county government and crime.
He earned bachelor's degrees in English and journalism from the University of Kansas, where he worked for the student newspaper, The University Daily Kansan. After growing up in Overland Park, Kan., Jack is looking forward to taking advantage of many of the outdoor activities Steamboat has to offer.

Contractor waiting for steel; new completion date is Dec. 31
The Cog Road slide repair project near Hayden has been delayed until mid-November. Heather McLaughlin, senior engineer for the Routt County Road and Bridge Department, said the contractor was waiting for steel from the manufacturer to begin the project.

Ella Mosciaro has been diagnosed with focal cortical dysplasia
Cindy Mosciaro said her 20-month-old daughter, Ella, would choose a bowl of green beans instead of a bowl of candy if given the option. The Mosciaros call her EllaBeans. Ella was diagnosed Oct. 9 with focal cortical dysplasia. Mosciaro said Ella has a lesion on her brain, which causes seizures.
BOCES won't handle No Child Left Behind funds
Money will go directly to school districts
The Northwest Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services will not be given federal No Child Left Behind Act funding for title programs to disburse to its six member school districts. A letter Wednesday from Robert Hammond, the deputy commissioner of the Colorado Department of Education, stated that the funds would be distributed directly to the districts instead of through BOCES.
College workshops in Steamboat today, Oak Creek on Thursday
College in Colorado will provide information about test preparation and how to apply to and pay for college at the free workshops.
Vance Fulton keeps Hayden District B seat
Incumbent tops challenger Laurie Hallenbeck for School Board
Hayden School Board member Vance Fulton will retain his seat and get his first full term as a board member. Fulton received 341 votes to opponent Laurie Hallenbeck's 206 in the District B School Board race.
Frentress wins Hayden District A seat
4th-generation Hayden resident beats Zehner for School Board
A former member of the Hayden Town Board, now Hayden Town Council, will represent District A on the Hayden School Board. Tim Frentress received 356 votes to the 192 received by opponent Darren Zehner, a 65 percent to 35 percent victory.
Connelly wins uncontested 4-year School Board seat
Denise Connelly won an uncontested race for her District 3 School Board seat Tuesday and will serve a second term. She received 2,749 votes.
Brian Kelly wins School Board seat
Longtime local defeats former educator Bill Kennedy for District 1
Brian Kelly won another chance to give back to the education community. He received 2,174 votes to challenger Bill Kennedy's 1,546, taking the Steamboat Springs School Board District 1 seat.
Open house in Steamboat to promote historic preservation program at CMC
CMC's Alpine Campus is trying to generate interest in its new historic preservation program and is hosting an open house from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. today in the second-floor lounge of Bristol Hall.
Elections Office, clerk's office only drop-off locations for votes
Ballots due in the Routt County Courthouse, in downtown Steamboat, by 7 p.m. Tuesday
Today and Tuesday, voters must return their ballots at the Routt County Courthouse, on Lincoln Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets in downtown Steamboat. Ballots can be returned in the Elections Office on the third floor and the Routt County Clerk & Recorder's Office on the second floor. Voters can drop off ballots until 5:30 p.m. today and until 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Elections Office opens at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Poplar Street in Hayden reopened to traffic Friday afternoon. The project to widen the street to three lanes and improve drainage was completed one week ahead of schedule.
