Jack Weinstein joined the Pilot & Today in May 2009 as the newspaper's education reporter. Before that, Jack worked for more than two years at The Olathe (Kan.) News, the last six months as news editor after more than a year and a half as a reporter covering city and county government and crime.
He earned bachelor's degrees in English and journalism from the University of Kansas, where he worked for the student newspaper, The University Daily Kansan. After growing up in Overland Park, Kan., Jack is looking forward to taking advantage of many of the outdoor activities Steamboat has to offer.

With little discussion and few changes, the Hayden Town Council approved the first reading of the 2010 budget Thursday night. The council approved the first reading of the $2.3 million budget, 6-0. Approval of the first reading sets up the second reading of the budget for the Dec. 10 Town Council meeting.

The Hayden Town Council will decide whether to approve the first reading of the proposed 2010 budget when it meets at 7:30 p.m. today. The town must adopt the nearly $2.2 million budget by Dec. 15. It’s due to the state by Jan. 31.

In its second year, the Routt County Livability Index can now begin to do what its creators intended. Last year’s index established a baseline to provide a basis of comparison for future years, said Grant Fenton, the project manager for the Routt County Economic Development Cooperative, the group that put together the study.

Gov. Ritter proposes $260M reduction in K-12 funding next year

Cuts would affect Routt County schools

It’s what they feared and expected but hoped wouldn’t happen. Gov. Bill Ritter announced this month the possibility of cutting $260 million from public K-12 funding in his proposed 2010-11 budget. One local school district official said if the cut comes to fruition, it will be “devastating.”

BOCES deficit lingers

Colorado statutes require school districts to have balanced budgets

The BOCES board approved the 2009-10 budget Thursday, carrying over a deficit of more than $34,000 from last year. BOCES will remain $34,000 in the red even after it applies $273,000 in Individuals with Disabilities Education Act federal stimulus funding and $44,000 in total payments from Steamboat Springs, Hayden and South Routt school districts for the Day Treatment Program.

CR 27 relocation finished

Xcel rail spur project near Hayden to continue in spring

The relocation of Routt County Road 27, part of the Xcel Energy project to reconstruct an existing rail spur that will take coal to the Hayden Station Power Plant, is complete, according to a company spokesman.
