The two met when Tompkins spoke about the positive impact of land preservation at the Boulder Public Library recently. Tompkins and her husband, Doug, founder of The North Face, have preserved more than 2.5 million square acres of land in southern Chile. Steamboat Ski Patrol member Charlie Reynolds had many stories about John Fetcher to tell a crowd Sunday during Fetcher's memorial at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort. Reynolds recalled the morning when Fetcher, patrolling in his 90s, spotted patrollers who were shadowing him from a distance to make sure things went smoothly for him. Fetcher didn't appreciate the gesture, Reynolds said, and successfully ditched the patrollers.
