Plenty of challenges await on the Horsethief Bench trail, a part of the Kokopelli trail system near Fruita, but none measure up to the intense drop where the trail starts, separating from Mary's Loop. A passenger from a Toyota Corolla is handcuffed after the Colorado State Patrol stopped the car Saturday morning on U.S. Highway 40. A caller reported that a passenger in the Toyota was waving a handgun as the car traveled east near Steamboat II. The weapon turned out to be an air-powered pellet gun, State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott said. Jesse McAndrew, 19, of Hayden, was shooting out a window at signs and ditches, Elliott said. McAndrew was cited for disorderly conduct. The situation wasn't as serious as authorities thought it was, Elliott said. "Obviously, we ask that people not do that," Elliott said. "It was suggested that if they want to shoot that they go to the range." The driver, a 15-year-old girl, was cited for driving without a valid license and not having proof of insurance, Elliott said. Both were released after the citations, he said. Steamboat Springs police and Routt County Sheriff's officials also responded to the call, which came at about 11 a.m.

SmartWool announced that it will use a design by Soda Creek fifth-grader Surina Techarukpong, center, for a sock that will be available in spring 2010 as part of the Kids4Kids collection. The company, which is based in Steamboat Springs, held a contest earlier this year at Soda Creek and Manhattan Middle School in Boulder, where the companies design center is located. Several designs produced by Soda Creek students were used for prototypes, but the company picked Techarukpong's for the girls sock. A student from Boulder's design was used for the boys sock. A collection of photographs shows Kerry Lofy's Hell's Wall huck last week in the backcountry near Steamboat Ski Area. Lofy jumped the approximately 100-foot-tall cliff after having spent the year competing on an extreme skiing tour. The 22-year-old Wisconsin native loaded up on extra back braces and extra cushioning but credited his experience for managing the feat without injury.

The rustic entryway of the Crawford home is like stepping into the past. Many of the mantles and fireplace fixtures were purchased from the Sears catalog. However, some of the rockwork around the mantles uses native stone and even onyx mined from quarries around Howelsen Hill.

The family lived in two log cabins and a framed house in what is now called Old Town Steamboat Springs before moving into the native sandstone home. The outside of the home, and the materials James Crawford used to create it, reflect the Steamboat Springs area and the time period in which he built the home.

Taking pictures on the trail was more difficult than expected, Thurston explained. "It was too cold to take my hands out of my pockets," he said.
