Eugene Buchanan waits in his kayak late last month as members of his Peruvian expedition lower a raft filled with supplies into the Colca Canyon. The water in the canyon was higher and colder than they'd expected, slowing the eight-member team and preventing them from navigating all 20 of the canyon's unexplored miles. Buchanan was the only one with a kayak, but the cold waters prevented his fellow explorers from swimming along beside him.

Buchanan said the main goal of his expedition in Colca Canyon in Peru was to navigate 20 miles of unexplored wilderness. The group also was on the lookout for the hidden treasures of the Incan empire. While El Dorado eluded the team, they did find eight ancient South American mummies in a cave while hiking after six days in the canyon.

Buchanan traveled to Peru with an expedition that had hoped to trek 20 miles of the canyon that never had before been traveled. The group, consisting mostly of Polish explorers, made it six miles, but they had to climb out after food and supplies ran low on the sixth day.
