Scherer is a bike mechanic and cycling tour guide in Germany but traveled to the United States to ride in the Tour Divide mountain bike race. Scherer and his riding partner, Alan Goldsmith, had their bikes tuned and had new chains put on during their 90-minute stop in Steamboat Springs.
