Workers at Howelsen Hill fight gusting winds while rolling up a length of blue fencing material Wednesday. Winds were blowing in Steamboat Springs throughout the afternoon and, at Howelsen, even blew over a section of scaffolding holding banners for Winter Carnival events. The harsh weather is expected to continue with a snowstorm forecast for tonight. Watch a video of Steamboat residents reacting to the weather on the Web, at www.steamboatpilot.com.
A young deer watches people pass outside an office building in the Steamboat Square business complex just east of downtown Steamboat Springs earlier this week. Some animals have been forced into a more urban setting in search of food. This animal normally would feed on the tall grass located on a nearby hillside. The Colorado Division of Wildlife is continuing to closely monitor winter conditions in Northwest Colorado to determine if feeding operations will become necessary for deer, elk, pronghorn and bighorn sheep. Continuing snowfall has made conditions worse in some areas, but biologists aren’t yet calling for a full-scale feeding operation as is occurring in the Gunnison Basin.
