Utah rancher Scott Chew rests on a fence before herding cattle into the back of a truck. Chew and his family spent the June day preparing to move cattle to their "summer ranches" on the Yampa River in Maybell and on the Elk River in Clark. Because of the chore, Chew did not have time to fix his broken irrigation system that day, leaving his fields drying in the sun. The number of irrigated agricultural acres in Northwest Colorado has decreased in recent years, from 230,000 in 1998 to 170,000 in 2005.

Earthmovers carve subdivision roads out of the desert at the new Dixie Springs development. It is situated between St. George, Utah, and the entrance to Zion National Park at Springdale, Utah. New homes would be only two miles from power boating at Sand Hollow Reservoir State Park, which stores domestic water for St. George. Dixie Springs, together with two other developments - Sky Ranch and Cliff Dwellers - will add 40,000 residential building lots to the historical town of Hurricane City. The present population of Hurricane City is just more than 13,000. The local newspaper reports that Hurricane City's population someday could exceed 150,000.

Bone caught the 30-pound, 11-ounce fish last Saturday at Stagecoach Reservoir. The state record for a northern pike is 30 pounds, 6 ounces.

Members of the Yampa Valley Fly Fishers help Colorado Division of Wildlife biologists count the numbers and species of fish in the Yampa River within the boundaries of the Chuck Lewis State Wildlife Area. The survey, completed in late fall 2004, found a few large trout in the stretch, along with northern pike, but very few younger trout. The crew used electro-shocking to temporarily stun the fish, making them easier to locate. They were returned safely to the water.
