Steamboat Springs High School hockey coach Jeff Ruff said the benefits are endless. Starting a preseason conditioning camp allows his players - new and old - to get into the system, get their legs under them and get a jump on the winter season.

For the second consecutive year, the Hayden football team finished its season with a win, pounding West Grand on Friday night, 35-7. The Tigers got two rushing touchdowns from Jake Walker, two from Treyben Letlow and one from Brian Hoza, running over the Mustangs for their fourth win of the season.

High hopes met a quick end Friday for the Hayden and Soroco high school volleyball teams. Both entered the district tournament at Meeker with hopes of upsets and semifinals, but neither was able to win in pool play, and both saw the season end.

Hayden football will travel for a 7 p.m. game today in Kremmling that, at least as far as the playoff brackets are concerned, does not matter. Neither Hayden nor West Grand has any hopes of making the postseason, and when the final buzzer sounds and the game ends, so will the 2009 football season for both programs.

Senior Rachael Koehler hopes the members of the Hayden High School volleyball team pick up a new nickname this week when they travel to Meeker for the district volleyball tournament. "We want to be the comeback kids," Koehler said. "We've been working really hard, and we feel like we can upset some teams at the district tournament." The Tigers took the first steps to earning that nickname Tuesday night by beating Plateau Valley in three games.

The Hayden girls volleyball team knocked off Soroco in three games Saturday evening. Still, no one watching would have called the performance dominating. The Tigers put together perfectly timed runs in each of the three games, and the 25-23, 27-25 and 25-18 win secured Hayden a season sweep against its cross-county rival.

After two games Friday night, things didn't look good for the hometown Hayden Tigers. But it takes three games to win a volleyball match, and the Tigers were not going to give up at home. Meeker jumped out to the lead by winning the first game 25-22 and then dominating the second, 25-7.

The Hayden High School football team held on for a 7-6 win Friday at Rangely. Rangely scored early to take a 6-0 lead in the first quarter before Hayden bounced back in the second quarter. Rene Valdez's extra point proved to be the difference maker. "It was an ugly one," Hayden coach Shawn Baumgartner said. "But we got away with one."
