Steamboat's elk season strong for some, empty for others
Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009
The 2009 elk and deer season is about to enter the fourth quarter, and how things are going depends on who you ask. Jon Wade aside, for instance, drove to some ground a buddy had given him permission to hunt on, walked over a ridge and took a shot almost immediately.
Even snow can't keep kayakers from hitting Gore Canyon
Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009
Dec. 12, Chan Zwanzig's birthday, was the latest in the season he ever dipped his kayak into the Colorado River for a run down Gore Canyon. On that Dec. 12, it was like he was kayaking in a Mario Brothers fantasy.
Joel Reichenberger: Welch is back on the bike
Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009
Realistically, Essam Welch had no choice but to "get back up on that horse." Welch and his bike are a fixture in Steamboat Springs, no matter the season. He doesn't even own a car, happily pedaling day in and day out from his home to his job at Orange Peel in downtown Steamboat.

Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009
I wasn't raised in a hunting family and have almost no familiarity with firearms. So it came as a surprise one dreary day this month in Fort Kent, Maine, when I was handed an exotic-looking .22-caliber biathlon rifle and invited to see whether I could hit a small black disc of a target 50 meters away.

To many, the concrete grandstands at the Brent Romick Rodeo Arena at Howelsen Hill in are the perfect place to workout. The steps make for a perfect obstacle. Tom Ross: Is curbside ski recycling coming?
Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009
I did something to a couple of buddies last year that left me feeling a little sad and guilt-ridden. I hauled them out to the curb on trash day. My 204 cm Elan MBX's, the pals I shared dozens of memorable powder days with, haven't been heard from since.

Weather is deciding factor this year in elk rifle season
Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009
There's plenty that goes into a successful elk hunt: a steady aim, a thorough knowledge of the backcountry and reliable equipment.
