Ski area offers 12 trails today

Officials hope to open gondola and Burgess Creek during weekend

Skiers and snowboarders let out whoops of excitement as they tipped over the top of Sitz to Vogue early Wednesday at Steamboat Ski Area. Scholarship Day, the first day of the season at Steamboat Ski Area, offered 12 runs and two lifts to skiers as a fundraiser for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. In the past 19 years, the annual event has raised more than $500,000 for local athletes. Sarah Floyd, director of athletics for the Winter Sports Club, served hot drinks to early-bird skiers Wednesday at a tent in Gondola Square. “What we’re doing right now is really just trying to show our appreciation to the people who support Winter Sports Club on Scholarship Day,” Floyd said.

Ski patrollers suit up for Scholarship Day

Group has new recruits, new gear for the season that starts today

Ready for the first day of the season, Steamboat Ski Area ski patrollers will be on the slopes keeping people safe and on the designated runs. Ski Patrol Director John Kohnke said three new patrollers will join the staff of nearly 100 for this ski season as they start patrolling on Scholarship Day today.

Snowmaking begins on Steamboat Ski Area

It's dumping snow at Steamboat Ski Area, with piles 4, 5 and even 6 feet deep. Snowmaking on the slopes began in earnest Sunday night and Monday morning, with crews now on standby 24 hours a day to make as much snow as possible in the 28 days leading up to the ski area's opening.
