Track starts season early

Luke Graham

— Although the official start to the high school track and field season is more than a month away, several local athletes are getting a head start.

Steamboat Springs High School runners Gus Allen and Jeff Sperry took part in an indoor meet Saturday in Boulder on a 200-meter indoor track.

Allen won his heat in the mile run by running a tactical race, and Sperry finished fourth in his heat in the 800-meter run.

Distance coach Greg Long has been working with the runners and said he was impressed with the early season efforts.

Long said in addition to Allen and Sperry, Scott Powers, Asher Rohde, Anna Poirot, Jack Burger and Hunter Thompson have been showing up for preseason workouts.

Track and field practices open Feb. 22, and the first meet is in March. But Long has the athletes building strength and aerobic capacity.

“To have athletes that are willing to work hard in January,” Long said in an e-mail, “I feel very blessed and optimistic about how the track team will perform this spring.”

Gorgone, Reiter finish 10th in Switzerland event

Michelle Gorgone and Justin Reiter each finished 10th on Sunday in a parallel giant slalom event in Nendaz, Switzerland.

Although each rider would have enjoyed going further in the event, the top-10 finish was a sign that things are moving in the right direction.

“This was a big step up for Justin to make it where he is — little frustrating to not go further, but a good result,” U.S. Snowboarding Alpine coach Jan Wengelin said in a U.S. Ski Team release.

Wengelin said after a slow start to the season for Gorgone, the 10th-place finish is a good finish.

“This was good for Michelle to get in a top-10 result for the season,” Wengelin said.

The team has one more World Cup on Sunday in Stoneham, Quebec, before the Olympic teams are announced Monday.

Steamboat’s Bradley 3rd at Jeffco Diving Meet

Steamboat Springs High School senior Genna Bradley finished third at the Jeffco Diving Meet, continuing her efforts as one of the favorites for the Class 4A state diving championship.

Bradley, who dives for Moffat County High School, finished third out of 37 divers and was the top 4A finisher. Her score of 367.3 was behind overall winner and defending Class 5A state champion Raleigh Williams (420.10) and Denver East’s Lizzy Linsmayer (387.00).

“I think we’re stepping it up to an A game,” coach Dave Fix said. “We’re not at an A-plus yet. We’re slowly starting to peak and nailing down some of the dives.”

Bradley’s next meet is Jan. 29 and 30 in Delta and Grand Junction.
