Steamboat Springs The snow fell so hard at times Saturday that it obscured racers just a few dozen yards apart.
It didn’t slow Steamboat’s bunch, however, as the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Nordic combined squad enjoyed a big day on its home turf.
A day before Steamboat Springs would be thrust into the world’s spotlight as Johnny Spillane won America’s first Nordic combined Olympic medal, the young athletes of the Winter Sports Club showed there are plenty of talented Nordic combined athletes following in his footsteps.
Steamboat skiers won all 13 of the contested divisions in the Friday-Saturday event.
“It was a great event,” said Todd Wilson, Nordic director with the Winter Sports Club. “The weather was a big challenge, but we pulled together and got some outstanding results from our kids.”
Cliff Field won the boys J1 of the Larry Johnson Junior Olympic qualifier. Other winners included Aleck Gantick in the boys J2 event, Maddison Keeffe in the girls J2, Finn O’Connell in the boys J3, Natalie Bohlmann in the girls J3, Wyatt Gebhardt in the boys J4, Dominique Katthain in the girls J4, Decker Dean in the boys J5, Maggie Morton in the girls J5, Bode Flanigan in the boys J6, Ingrid Wedel in the girls J6, Bastion Elkins in the boys open division and Esther DelliQuadri in the girls open division.
The team the Rocky Mountain Division will field at the Junior Olympics, set for early next month in Steamboat, was named.
The Winter Sports Club is again very well represented. All but one member of the team trains with the club.
The team this year consists of Erik Lynch, Cliff Field, Adam Loomis, Fritz Carpenter, Aleck Gantick, Zeb Tipton, Michael Ward, Nicholas Madden, Mary O’Connell, Maddison Keeffe, Jasper Good, Ben Barend and Jake Barker.
