— Steamboat Springs High School hockey coach Jeff Ruff said the benefits are endless.

Starting a preseason conditioning camp allows his players - new and old - to get into the system, get their legs under them and get a jump on the winter season.

Under Colorado High School Activities Association rules, coaches and teams are allowed to run a conditioning camp before the start of practice Nov. 12.

"The main reason is to get started earlier to have better preparation for when we start our season," Ruff said. "With guys trying out, we'll have a more accurate look at how we perform."

Ruff will have a review of systems at 3:45 p.m. today in his classroom at Strawberry Park Elementary School. The team will the be on the ice at Howelsen Ice Arena on Thursday and all next week from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m.

Other Steamboat sports also have started with conditioning camps.

The boys basketball team is going from 4 to 6 p.m. all week at the high school.

The girls team is doing the same thing through Thursday and next week.

"It allows us to get some of our system in," Steamboat girls basketball coach John Ameen said. "We review our system. The young kids acclimated to our system. We get our basketball minds and bodies back into basketball."

"For us, more than anything else, it helps us build a foundation of fundamentals and get guys into shape," Steamboat boys basketball coach Luke DeWolfe added.

Wrestling has its conditioning camp at 4 p.m. all week at the high school.

The Steamboat Nordic and Alpine skiing teams already are engulfed in dryland training.

The Nordic and Alpine teams are doing dryland training from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Howelsen.

Skiers will get on snow, well, when there is snow.

In Soroco, the boys basketball team will have open gyms from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the high school, and the girls team will begin practice Nov. 16.

The Rams wrestling team will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at the high school to discuss plans.

At Hayden, high school practices are scheduled to begin Nov. 12.

Calls about preseason camps were not returned Tuesday.
