— College in Colorado will provide free college preparatory workshops at Steamboat Springs High School tonight and at Soroco High School on Thursday night.

The workshops will include information about planning for college, including test prep, how to apply to and how to pay for college, said Bridget Black, a spokeswoman for College in Colorado.

At the workshops, Black said College in Colorado, which is an initiative of the state Department of Higher Education to improve access to college, participants will learn about its College Application Week. The program, which runs through Sunday, includes participation from 39 two- and four-year postsecondary schools in the state that have waived their application fees. Some schools only waived the application fees for students who qualify for the federal free and reduced lunch program, Black said.

"Improving the chances for Coloradans to attend college continues to be a cornerstone of my administration," Gov. Bill Ritter said in a news release. "The impact higher education has on overcoming some of the challenges our society faces is without argument."

Tonight's workshop at Steamboat Springs High School will be 5:30 to 7:30. Thursday night's workshop at Soroco High School will be 6 to 7:30.
