Steamboat Springs About two weeks ago, I was startled to realize that I've lived in Steamboat Springs for 18 months.
It wasn't an unpleasant surprise - and really it shouldn't have been a surprise at all, considering my ownership of a calendar - but it did inspire an effort to remember where all that time went.
A fair amount of the 13,000 hours or so I've passed in Routt County have been spent working or sleeping or attempting to snowboard. The rest of them have been spent being 22 and 23 years old in a ski resort town, trying to decide what to do after work.
Entertainment options certainly change with the seasons, but there are some spots and events that remain constant. As a break from the "what Margaret Hair thinks you should do this weekend" feature that runs on page 2, here's a look at what I'm more likely doing, if I've made it out of the house:
¤ Sunday - A prime night to catch live music that's usually a little less energetic than a weekend show, in a good way. Old Town Pub is the best bet here.
¤ Monday - Open mic at Mahogany Ridge. Like any open mic night, you'll occasionally come across an off-kilter act. Not like most open mic nights, a steady group of local musicians comes out to jam on bluegrass or rock tunes.
¤ Tuesday - $1 games and $1 PBR at Snow Bowl. Making a reservation the day before is the best way to ensure a lane time; otherwise, open lanes are hard to come by before 11 p.m.
¤ Wednesday - Live trivia at The Tap House followed by $1 PBR night at Mazzola's. You can celebrate a trivia victory with cheap beer, or quell a crushing trivia defeat with cheap beer. Either way, the atmosphere is locals-centered and lively, and the bar usually stays open late.
¤ Thursday - I'm a fan of watching the bartenders at The Boathouse Pub pour half-price martinis, despite never actually ordering them. The bar tends to fill up, especially during happy hour, and there's entertainment value in trying to remember what goes in a French martini.
¤ Friday - Old Town Pub dance party. It's crowded, but it's always a sight. Second best bet for me is any show at The Tap House - often announced just a week or two in advance, almost always free, and on one of the more logical dance floors downtown.
¤ Saturday - Bands at Mahogany Ridge or late-night happy hour at Slopeside.
