Shaffer led officers on a high-speed chase that started at Fifth Street and Lincoln Avenue in Steamboat Springs and ended more than 30 miles away in Grand County. Routt County Sheriff's Office Investigator Ken Klinger, who was at the scene in Grand County, said law enforcement officers pursued the truck over Rabbit Ears Pass and into Grand County before it was finally stopped and Shaffer was arrested. Klinger said the man had multiple arrest warrants out of Routt and Moffat counties for domestic violence and was in possession of multiple, loaded firearms at the time of his arrest.
Steamboat Springs — A 50-year-old Craig man is in custody at Routt County Jail after leading authorities on a 30-mile chase Monday evening.
Glen Alan Shaffer faces a bevy of charges ranging from multiple counts of motor vehicle theft to prohibited use of a weapon, eluding and alcohol-related offenses, Routt County Sheriff's Office Investigator Ken Klinger said. He also has an outstanding warrant related to domestic violence charges.
The pursuit began after Steamboat Springs Police Department officers tried to pull over Shaffer near Fifth and Yampa streets. Officers observed him drinking a beer while driving, and he was behind the wheel of a black pickup reported stolen out of Craig, Klinger said.
Shaffer led officers on a pursuit eastbound on River Road to Colorado Highway 131, where Shaffer turned north toward Steamboat Springs. Shaffer then turned east onto U.S. Highway 40 and headed up Rabbit Ears Pass with Routt County Sheriff's Office, Steamboat Springs Police Department and Colorado State Patrol troopers in pursuit.
Pursuing officers reported that Shaffer was weaving, reaching under his seat, and driving between 50 and 75 mph.
As the chase headed up Rabbit Ears Pass, officers deployed stop sticks at two locations to puncture the tires of the stolen pickup. Shaffer continued to elude officers, even as the truck's tires shredded from the puncture wounds and he was left to drive on its rims.
At times, Shaffer drove into oncoming lanes of traffic, but there were no reports of any accidents or injuries as a result of the pursuit. As he continued east on U.S. 40 into Grand County, Shaffer and the pickup slowed until it eventually came to a stop near mile marker 171. Officers arrested Shaffer without further incident.
Klinger said officers found 10 firearms in the pickup, including a loaded .357 magnum and a loaded high-powered rifle, both on the front seat. The other guns were an assortment of rifles and shotguns, Klinger said.
A Jackson County Sheriff's Office drug dog uncovered a small amount of marijuana from the pickup, Klinger said. The Grand County Sheriff's Office also responded to the incident.
Shaffer's Routt County rap sheet includes a September 2008 arrest on suspicion of third-degree assault, menacing and harassment; an August 2002 arrest on suspicion of theft and being a fugitive of justice; and a June 2002 arrest on suspicion of theft and disorderly conduct. The disposition of those cases wasn't immediately available Monday night. He also was arrested in Moffat County in March 2006 on suspicion of DUI, careless driving and possession of marijuana. He was booked into Moffat County Jail in September 2004 on suspicion of violating a restraining order.

Yep, WZ gotta love rural America. At the same time this man was leading police on a chase, how many crimes were committed in any city any where. How many Obama voters, stole a vehicle, drove intoxicated, used illegal drugs, participated in domestic violence or....

... sounds like a model citizen. umh, it may or may not have helped here but once again it does bring to mind the issue of reasonable background checks/gun control?? next week are we going to hear that he was worried that Obama was gonna take his cold beer away from his dreaded, cold hands....

I dare say that if he broke into most rural homes, got through the security systems, into the gun safe while dodging bullets from the homeowner that was protecting his home or family he could have stolen that many or more guns from just about anywhere!!

If the Obama supporters had their way, this could never have happened. The Obama A I's (appointed idiots) want your guns! That means that your neighbor could not protect you or your loved ones, your property or himself if OUR guns are seized. Just a shame that this did not happen in the presence of a gun owner that was home and able to stop it.
Just look at the court time and officers time that could have been spent doing other things.

Sounds like law enforcement did a great job of getting this guy off the street. It's very fortunate this guy didn't have the chance to take a few incocent lives with him.

Interesting assumption that this was a political thread. I did notice that the press seemed to stop with the facts after they noted that the suspect had 10 guns. They didn't seem to inquire about the source of the guns, about the details of the stolen vehicle or even if there was stolen property involved. Now about that assumption by WZ that the guy was a Bush voter. BTW. I would be surprised if he votes. Was WZ's assumption because the suspect recognized the potential resale value of the guns or was it because he had enough sense not to get in a shootout with the police?

This Guy has been drinking for years, and no he does not vote, He is a loser. He has had problems for years. Beer and life is what made him do what he did. He has no reguard for his life. So I know he does not care about anyone else or what we think. Now tax dollars has to pay to keep him locked up. What a waste.

Rural America voted in Bush, period. That's not an assumption, that's a fact. You live in rural America, chances are you voted for Bush. Whether a car this rural American person steals has 10 guns in it (the rural American's guns or the owner's guns), this rural American has a criminal history, and/or whether this rural American beats his/her wife/husband or not, chances are this rural American voted for Bush. Do the math.
Whether this rural American decided he needed 10 of his guns in the car after he stole it, or whether all, or even some of the guns, were already in the car when this rural American stole it, either way, the fact that there even *were* 10 guns in this, or *any* car, *anywhere*, is not only alarming, but I would imagine quite possible and very legal, which in and of itself is also alarming.
What irony, this story taking place in rural Americ, rural America voting Bush in, and where we are today. It jest makes yer think some, not muhch, jest a liter bit...
Like I stated earlier, God bless America, all its guns and beautiful people.

WZ- your generalizing of an entire demographic can not be countered against because such broad statements about Obama voters would be perceived as racist or elitist.
Don't you understand that there is a significant underbelly of our entire society like this? It has a healthy representation in both rural and urban America. Regardless of which side of the ballot these lowlifes vote (which most don't vote at all), this is not an appropriate circumstance for your political rantings.
Just be glad this dude will not hurt anyone else in the future. It makes you wonder how many of people just like him are out there? Once again, thank you to those officers for a successful arrest. This could have been a much worse situation.

Somebody like Feldman will be appointed to represent him and they'll plead it down to running a red light in a no-overnight parking zone. I base this on the previous cases where human lives were lost (vehiclular homicide) and the perpetrators got less than a year in the pokey.
Too bad he wasn't on coke. They could put him into a diversion program with the lawyers for the drug part, and make him take a defensive driving course for the rest.
He didn't try to use the guns, but because they were loaded and so was HE, he'll have them confiscated and not returned. That's enough punishment all by itself in many people's eyes. Unless they were stolen, of course, in which case they'll be returned to the rightful owner.

I know it's clear off topic, but since there isn't much meat here anyway; I have to ask. WZ did you ever consider that the elections of 2000 and 2004 had lots to do with the quality of the candidates that the Democrats offered? I mean Bill Clinton came from the population you deride and he seemed to work out as long as he didn't run against a real candidate. And now the current President, was it white guilt or running against an aging senator with no platform? Just asking.

Voter information is public record. One cannot determine who voted for whom, however, it is pretty easy to determine if a person has voted and which elections they voted in if one cares to know that level of information.
The information that is available to the public is: (full name; residential address; party affiliation and date of affiliation; phone number (if provided by the voter); gender; birth year; an indication of whether the voter has elected to permanently participate in elections by mail-in ballot; and, information about whether a voter has voted in elections.)
Brent - / This would be an interesting list to publish in the paper a few weeks prior to any election. Only information needed would be the individual's name and whether a person voted in the last election. I can assure you that it would result in higher voter participation. Never underestimate the value of peer pressure to increase civic involvement.

justice4none- i can't even come up with anything to top your stupid blog...BUT, i do have one question for you...what were the officer's supposed to have been doing with their time?? this guy is a drunk, driving a stolen truck, guzzling beer, with 10 guns, 2 loaded....to protect and serve...they WERE 'spending their time' the best way possible and did it well with the best outcome!
