Steamboat Springs Soroco High School girls basketball coach David Bruner said his team reeled off three of the best quarters of the season Saturday against Meeker.
That wasn't enough to pull off the upset against the No. 10 Cowboys, however. Soroco fell, 59-39.
"Meeker's a good ball team - ranked 10th in the state, and they should be," Bruner said. "Still, we played three quality quarters against a good team, and I'm really pleased with that."
Soroco's undoing came early in the first quarter. Senior Sarajane Rossi went to the bench with two fouls after just three minutes. Meeker took advantage and opened up a 23-5 lead.
The team's troubles got worse later. Freshman Madison George, the team's second leading scorer behind Rossi, sat out most of the second quarter and the entire second half after taking a hard knock to the nose. Two other Rams fouled out early in the fourth quarter.
Still, the team played better, Bruner said. The gap was cut as low as 12 at one point before Meeker stretched it out again late in the fourth quarter.
"Our kids stepped up and played hard," Bruner said.
Rossi finished with 18 points to lead all scorers as the Rams fell to 5-7 on the season.
Soroco boys team tumbles against Meeker, 69-54
Soroco's boys team lost for just the second time this season, falling at Meeker, 69-54. The Rams, 10-2, return to action Friday at Plateau Valley.
