Moffat County Commissioner Saed Tayyara, who died Saturday in Craig, leaves behind him a legacy of public service.Tayyara emigrated to the U.S. from Syria in 1963 and became an American citizen in 1972. He came to Craig several years later, opening a restaurant in 1975. But it was as a politician that he left his mark on the community. During the next 30 years, Tayyara would forge a political career that spanned periods of boom and bust in Moffat County.

The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team is facing a conundrum. Depending on whom you ask and where you look, there are several ways to perceive this year's edition of the Sailors on frozen seas. Gaze down to the third and fourth lines - which will be vital to the team's success this season - and it's apparent the Sailors are very young. But look in net and glance at some of the offensive and defensive pairings, and it's apparent that Steamboat has the potential to be a top team.

Chris Baumann insists he hasn't done anything yet. But a quick look down the U.S.A. Rugby team's national roster tells a different story. Baumann - who started playing summer rugby with Steamboat's club team four years ago - recently made the U.S. Select XV Team - essentially, the national team's B squad.

Drywall artist transforms walls of Phippsburg's Black Dog Inn

During her stay at the Black Dog Inn in Phippsburg, Bonnie Brokaw has not been the typical hotel guest. The heavy-equipment operator from Lake George, staying in Phippsburg while working for West Pueblo-based K.R. Swerdfeger Construction on Oak Creek's sewer line rehabilitation project, has put her more artistic talents to use for Black Dog Inn owners Marlene and Michael Smith.

It's a funny thing, these woolly wonderful animals - sheep. They produce wool for Routt County Woolens, the locally grown wool blanket company (Blankets - Ahhh - warm and snuggly!). The sheep in our beautiful Yampa Valley grow incredibly clean wool, thanks in part to the record amounts of snowfall we enjoy. These sheep also are high-quality wool producers, because they are raised and cared for by talented, hard-working and knowledgeable ranchers.
