Pink scarves on sale for breast cancer awareness

For the fifth consecutive year, pink scarves are on sale at Epilogue Book Co. on Lincoln Avenue, in time for the holiday season, with all profits benefiting the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Program. Donations of funds or yarn can also be made. Call Jo at 846-2627.

Gingerbread houses sought for Merry Mainstreet event

The Promotion Committee of Mainstreet Steamboat Springs is looking for amateur and professional gingerbread house decorators to submit their creations as part of the new Merry Mainstreet Downtown Holiday Celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 13. Lincoln Avenue will be closed to traffic, and prizes will be awarded in three categories: children’s amateur, adult amateur and professional. The houses will be displayed downtown in stores for a week after the Merry Mainstreet event. The Steamboat Arts and Crafts Gym will offer drop-in gingerbread classes for several weeks before the event, and The Homesteader will offer a gingerbread house class Dec. 9. Hapkido class registration available Monday at CMC

Registration for the next semester of classes in hapkido, a Korean martial art of self-defense, begins Monday at Colorado Mountain College’s Alpine Campus in Steamboat Springs. Classes run from Jan. 16 to May 1, 2009. Call 870-4444 for registration information, or call Kat Kelly at 846-8148 to learn more about hapkido.

Volunteers needed for winter sports program

Volunteers are needed for Horizons Specialized Services’ 32nd annual Ski and Winter Sports Program. Horizons, Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. and volunteers from the community partner each season to provide winter sports programs for individuals with developmental disabilities.

The program is an opportunity to get involved, meet new people and spend seven Saturday or Tuesday afternoons helping Horizons clients enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.

United Way announces Christmas Wishes program

Routt County United Way is looking for people to adopt needy families for its Christmas Wishes program. Any business or individual who would like to adopt a family or donate can call the office at 879-5605.
