Violin performances, skits, and an essay about NASCAR racing.

Those were a few of the presentations scheduled for the Northwest Colorado Homeschool Association Achievement Night on Friday at First Christian Church.

For many home-schooled students and their parents, the event marked the end of the academic year and ushered in the school-free summer months, said Tobi Chacon, Homeschool Association vice president and area home school mother.

The majority of home-schooled students follow the public school’s academic year, she said, beginning in the fall and ending in late spring or summer.

Chacon’s three children — Marlee, Isaac and Jerod — were scheduled to participate in the event, she said, which showcased about 15 performances.

“It’s just a fun thing to do,” Chacon said. “It’s a fun thing to get together as families to support each other in what we believe.

“We believe … in family values,” she said. “We believe in family values and home schooling brings the family together.”

About 20 families in Northwest Colorado and Baggs, Wyo., belong to the group, Chacon said.

Friday’s achievement night brought an end to a school year that, for Homeschool Association members, included other group activities.

Home-schoolers gather at least two times a month to take co-operative classes.

Each class centers around a common theme, Chacon said, adding that past classes have focused on insects and history.

Home schooled students also meet once a month at the Boys & Girls Club of Craig for a joint physical education class.

These activities are open to members and nonmembers, Homeschool Association President Michelle Peters said.

The Hoomeschool Association’s joint activities give home schooled students a social outlet of sorts, Chacon said.

In addition to helping lead the group, Chacon home-schools her three children.

That is, when she’s not working as a part-time cosmotologist.

Chacon said she doesn’t regret her position as a home school mother.

“For me, personally, homeschooling is a blessing,” she said.

“We’re privileged to be able to spend the extra time we get with our children” while giving them an education, she said.

That is all that we ask you to do on this site, except in writing. We use the essay form because it is the most efficient form of organization available and we automate the organization so that you limit your statements to proving only the things that you have already stated were true.
